Why did they build a copy of the London Gherkin?

Lack of original ideas in paris. many cities have tried to copy the london Swiss Re, but they all failed, it's a one of a kind tower and should not be copied.
Paris also built a poor copy of the london pinnacle, it's because London builds fantastic and unique looking skyscrapers and paris wants to have good towers as well, so they copy from London.
I have to say tho that the D2 tower in paris is much poorer quality, design and cladding that the London Swiss re, and the paris tour first copy of the London pinnacle is also a poor and cheap copy of the amazing London pinnacle tower

London pinnacle is not even completed and has been redesigned (how could you know that it is amazing ), First tower in Paris is completed since three years.
It is not a copy as it was built before.
Both towers have the same architects, this explains the similarity.

Important to note that all those skyscrapers are not actually within the borders of Paris, but located in a town outside of Paris.

Yes SF. They do have a part of town that has skyscrapers, however San Franciscans have largely resisted further building of skyscrapers

A town outside Paris? The pic is taken from Montmartre. Paris municipality gathers only 20% of the population of the urban area, it's extremely small. The municipalities of Neuilly-sur-Seine, Levallois-Perret and Courbevoie are every bit as urban as any Parisian arrondissement.

I really like skylines, but it has to fit with the city. A small city like Jefferson City, MO it doesn't make sense. But Chicago or NYC with millions of people, then you a big skyline kinda defines the city. When you see a skyline you have a tendency to identify a city by it. Everyone recognizes the skyline of NYC, Chicago, Dallas (maybe), Los Angeles, but if you showed a picture of lets say Springfield, MO, will anyone recognize it? No, and the only small cities or areas people seem to know if it had a major landmark.

Isn't that the financial district of Paris? I remember seeing that when I visited a couple of times, and I remember BNP Paribas was located in a skyscraper in a financial district.

Is this the financial district of Paris? Yes and no. It would be better to say that this is "a financial district of Paris".
Many big bank and financial companies are located in Central Paris.
The CBD of Paris is located in Central Paris around Place de l’Opéra, Champs Elysées.

BNP Paribas is not located in la Défense and I don't know if it has any big office in the area.
You are confusing with Société Générale bank.
The HQ of BNP Paribas is located in the 9th arrondissement and it has a lot of office around the Place de l’Opéra.

La Defense has only 7% of the total office space of Paris metropolitan area, there are much more office space and business employees in Central Paris.
