My guess is that they also to make traffic worse (by taking people off public transit and adding extra cars on the road), reduce walking/biking (healthier alternatives and increase USA's obesity crisis) and overall increase car dependency in the US. Driverless cars might also have a similar effects. New technology and products do not always seem to have the effect/outcomes people expect.

That has already happened here, though I haven't seen or heard of fatalities yet. When stuck in traffic we see many Uber and Lyft cars mixed in. I even saw one yesterday with stickers for both companies in the window, odd that either allows their drivers to also work for the competitor. Another thing is that they pick up and drop off in odd places, often unsafe or illegal to stop, creating dangerous situations. A coworker lives less than a mile away but takes Uber to work and back rather than walk or bike, and there is a bus that could be used. The popularity of these is the convenience, rather than waiting 10-20 minutes for the next bus and packing in with so many others with a lot of stops in between taking up more time.
