There is an article in the Detroit Free Press today about how ideas for urban farming are gaining momentum in Detroit, due to all of the vacant land there.

Are there other cities around the country where this is happening? Any C-D opinions on this?

I just saw a movie on Sundance about a a completely organic urban community farm in Philadelphia, and I can't remember the name. But anyway, I love the idea. I like it all over the nation. I think we're starting to see more people becoming interested in where their food come from, which can only be a good thing. Realistically, it won't feed a large amount of the population, but it's still beneficial socially.

I think there are a couple of places here in Louisville. There is a community garden where you pay $20 a season to use their plot at a historic home in the SW part of the county and it seems like I have heard about a place downtown.

There has been a lot of talk about urban farming in Youngstown. But, so far, nothing real has happened, that I'm aware of. But there are working farms in the city. They're in parts of Youngstown that were never urban, but are within the city limits.

There is some urban farming in Coquille, Oregon--a very small city however. I'm sure there must be something like that in Portland though, but probably on a smaller scale since there isn't a lot of vacant land in the city.

There are a lot of urban homesteaders in Portland and Eugene, where they grow things in their own backyard and try to live as off the grid as they can in the middle of the city.

I thought "urban farming" was dumpster diving.

Newark has a small, upstart farm called "Brick City Urban Farms".

Do you know which ten block area is being considered in the case of Detroit?
