You're right, I find LIRR better than the subway. Where I live in Nassau county takes the same amount of time to get to midtown, compared to when I lived in Maspeth, Queens (only like 5 miles from midtown). It's because in my old neighborhood in Queens, you had to take a 10 minute bus ride to the subway, and then it was a local subway ride that took about 30 minutes.
If I was to go to Manhattan using the subway it would take a 30 minute bus ride to the E train, then take the E train (about 1 to 1.5 hours) all together it would take like 2 hours. The LIRR takes 25 to 30 minutes (a little longer if I have to switch at Jamaica).
In Maryland we have a number of different rail options. In the DC suburbs we have 4 heavy rail Metro (2nd busiest system in the country) lines. Two light rail systems in Maryland's DC suburbs will also be built. Baltimore and its suburbs have heavy rail (subway) and light rail lines. There's also a commuter rail service called MARC (like SEPTA or NJ Transit) which has 3 lines branching out from DC. There's also frequent high-speed intercity rail service on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor with stops at Baltimore, DC, BWI Airport etc. Union station in DC also has Amtrak trains to the South and West.

Why so long? The express train runs through most of Manhattan, and then you switch trains for a couple stops once you get downtown. It shouldn't take you more than 45 minutes or so.
I noticed in ny there aren't many system maps or time till next train signs or anythin to help outsiders
