Lightbulb Filmmaking in Utah

Are there any filmmakers in Utah besides the notable Robert Redford? There's nothing wrong with Redford's films, but I'm just curious. Does anyone know any good leads? Utah is such a beautiful place, so why does its film production (potential) lack?

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

Do you know of any production companies in the area? (Salt Lake or Utah county). If you know the names - that's great!

I don't know the companies. Soem small ones in No. Utah. Most studios are close enough they just send film crews to the area. Osmonds had a studio facility long ago at the mouth of Provo Canyon. It was bought by someone else. You might check it out. Call either Provo, or Orem Chamber of Commerce and see what they know.

Yeah, I heard about that. They will be filming most of the movie after school hours. I think they must have filmed the other ones in the St George area, because the cast of HSM stayed at a REAAALY nice resort down there somewhere. They have a picture of it on there website.

Utah has been the site of many, many movies. It is also home to the famous Sundance Film Festival in Park City.

Jared and Jerusa Hess (creators of "Napoleon Dynamite" and "Nacho Libre") are Utahns too.

There have been quite a few movies filmed in southern Utah, especially in the Monument Valley area (think of John Wayne westerns). The area around Kanab has also been used extensively for filming. The Paria "ghost town" was used in the movie "The Outlaw Josey Wales." There is even an old movie set (that is now a museum) right in the city of Kanab.

As for movie related companies and individuals, I don't know. Sorry I can't help you out with that part of your question.

The Kanab area was the central area for many Westerns, TV and movies. On the Best Friends Society property, you can see the rock outcropping where the Lone Ranger reared up his horse, saying, "Hi ho, Silver!" Before Best Friends bought the 3,000 acres, it was a private ranch that was used for many films. There's a perfect slot canyon area to "head them off at the pass."
At the end of August, there's a big (for Kanab) parade of many of the old actors from those filmings, and local ranchmen ride and herd cattle through the streets. The actors then have a big breakfast with local people and fans.
I ate at a Mexican restaurant in Kanab the day of the parade. My waitress was a young Polish girl, a student working there for the summer. She couldn't figure out why a bunch of farmers (peasants, to her!) were riding and herding animals through the streets. She also told me she couldn't stand Kanab and couldn't wait for the summer to end. Turns out she hadn't been anywhere else in the U.S., had only seen, say, New York in movies. I told her that I was from the U.S. and found the Kanab area to be an unusual part of America!
