Worried about Highland
I am moving to Highland from Lehi in a few months and I am worried about some of the recent things I've heard about the area. We are not LDS, and some of our friends have told us it's a very close minded area. We were worried about living in Utah county in general but living in Lehi has been great. We have lived here for four years and everyone in our neighborhood now has been wonderful, mormons and non-mormons alike. So we are afraid that Highland might be in too much of a bubble, with nothing open on Sunday, and the protesting of a Smith's or Albertsons comming into the area. Please let me know what you think about this area, and if any of you know people who live there. Thanks.

This post doesn't make any sense. You are moving like 5 miles from where you already live and are worried about the area? I don't think that Highland is much different than Lehi. If you don't find Lehi confining and closed minded I doubt there will be much of a difference a stones throw away.

The reason I'm worried, is because of all the craziness about the Smiths and Albertsons comming into the area, and how crazy everyone got about it. Lehi isn't like that at all. Also NOTHING is open in Highland on Sunday not even the Wendy's. In Lehi almost everything operates as usual on Sunday. I don't think it's because there are less mormons in Lehi, I think it may be that it's just a more layed back atmosphere. However I hope you are right, because I really don't want to live in an uptight area.

I don't know if this is a valid comparison, but I grew up in North Ogden. That city is possibly one of the most "mormon" communities in northern Utah and our Smiths was open every Sunday! You could always make the 5 minute drive to a store in Lehi if you had to get that milk sunday morning. Look at it this way....Sundays are the best shopping days there!

Don't Worry!
Dear Concerned Mom: Don't worry! We live in a new community in Highland and we have non-Mormons and Mormons who don't go to church and Mormons who go to church, and we all get along just fine. In fact, we just moved here from Florida last year and are very happy. We have neighbors from New York, Illinois, California, Arizona, Idaho, etc. Even if they are Mormon, because they have been the minority in other places, they are sensitive to people of different religious backgrounds. I also work at Lone Peak High School and know several kids who are not Mormon, and they love going to school there and have lots of friends. I love Highland - it's a great place to raise a family.

Highland is just a more expensive Lehi, really. It's true they do have a few stricter laws (no alcohol sales, no Sunday commerce) but you'll be so close to Lehi, that really won't matter. I think you'll find an extremely similar situation where you're moving, with the same sort of people in general. There's really nothing to worry about.
For what it's worth, I'm in Cedar Hills, and we've had our own drama over grocery stores and Sunday commerce and Wally World, but in general it's a few outspoken people on each side, with the vast majority of us sitting in the middle and wishing they'd quit making our town look bad. Don't worry about the protests, they're just part of life.

If you are worried about moving to Highland... don't move here then. Nobody is forcing you to come. So if your not happy with things being closed on Sunday then go somewhere where you can shop or do something on Sunday. Because Highland isn't looking to change. This is why we have upheld these standards of not selling acohol or being open on sunday. That is how we like it. This is why we are the way we are. How would you feel if we were worried about moving to Lehi because things are open on Sunday? And we complained about it? You'd tell us to not come then.
