I am doing some research on fireflies and I have read that fireflies do not exsist west of about the middle of Kansas. But the more research I do I am finding that there are reports of sightings in Colorado, even as far as Arizona and Utah. The reports of sightings that I have read come from the areas close to the Great Salt Lake Wetlands, like Plain City, Willard and as far north as Perry. I just want to confirm that there is a viable population of fireflies and if so how many are usually seen, what months of the year they are most active, where you have seen them, what color do they flash, and the habitat that they are mostly seen in. Thank you for your responses.

Hm, I'm from Salt Lake City and I've never seen fireflies there. Seeing them was one of my favorite things about visiting my family in Ohio!

Sadly, no. There are no fireflies in Utah. One of the greatest things I miss from back east. My poor girls have never known the joy..

Not germane to Utah, but in S. Colorado's San Luis Valley, I recall hearing that they have fire flies near a hot spring in the Crestone area, I believe. Undoubtedly introduced by someone. That was over ten years ago, so I cannot vouch that they are still there. Regardless, they are not native west of the Rockies.

It is the reason we don't have fleas, but I beg to differ on the mosquitoes. There are tons of those little blood suckers! Granted, they aren't as large as the ones I have encountered in AK, but they are here!

You've never experienced mosquitoes until you've lived in Wisconsin.

We used to be COVERED in them just by walking out the door.

It just doesn't happen here like that.
