Smile Moving TO Lehi....My Thoughts On LDS

I am relocating to Lehi in a couple of weeks. I am originally from Southern CA but have been living in MA for nearly 5 years. I have seen A LOT of people on here that seem to almost fear or dislike the LDS. I was raised Catholic but am not practicing. I do not know much about the LDS faith and life style but I personally have never heard anything bad. I am just curious as to why some seem so fearful of them? I was on vacation in Utah in May and was not only very impressed by the beauty of the state, but was extremely impressed at how friendly and nice everyone was. In CA most people are friendly. Here in MA the people are rude, unfriendly, have filthy mouths...even little children!!! I generally am not into little kids because all of the ones I am around out here are not taught how to act like human beings, they cuss, fight, scream, and run wild. When I was in Utah I was SHOCKED at how well mannered and well behaived the kids are. I even had a couple of little ones hold a door for me...not even the adults do that here in MA!!! Once I saw Utah I was sold and will be there in a couple of weeks. Although I am not LDS....I have a STRONG faith in God. I am looking forward to making new friends and getting to know my neighbors, LDS or not! It is obvious to me that the LDS must be doing something right....look at how friendly, beuatiful and clean Utah is!!! I understand that the LDS generally do not smoke, cuss, or drink. That will be a GREAT change from being in MA!!! Everyone in MA smokes and I can not believe how a complete stranger on the streets here will cuss you out and call you FILTHY names. I am really looking forward to being in Utah!!! Although I am not looking to convert my faith, I am looking forward to new friends of all faiths and walks of life.

I'm moving to Utah also! Having visited there a few times I have never had problems with LDS. I am not Mormon myself and have no intention of converting but they have always been very friendly, polite, and relaxed to be around. They live a very good life and are respectful people. The state is clean and beautiful and with my own faith in God being around those who appreciate that which is so important I am looking forward to it.

I'll give a little chuckle because you'll understand what people mean once you've been here for a while. I'm atheist, and have no intentions of leaving UT. It is absolutely beautiful and I consider it one of the safest places in the world to raise a family. That being said...Utah Mormons are very different than non-Utah mormons. They can be VERY judgemental, clicky, and have a tendency to ostracize non-mormons when you show no signs of converting to their religion.

I lived in Semi Valley and Pepperell, MA prior to moving here. When I moved here during my highschool years, I found myself SWARMMED with girls who were more than happy to welcome me to the area. But, after about 6 months of being my friends they bombarded me with religion, began only hanging out with me in church places (like Temple Square) and they began preaching to me. When I politely declined to be baptised in their church, every single one of the 11 girls refused to even speak to me again. If I came to the lunch table, they would all vacate. I have found this to be decently true of older mormon women also. They are sweet as can be when they meet you (so long as you are dressed like a mormon), but when they found out I wasn't LDS, they no longer cared to talk to me. I'm hardly fowl mouthed or rude...but simply learning that I wasn't married in the temple is enough for many of them to not have interest in me.

Lol, wait to you find yourself wearing a tank top or short-shorts to the store. You'll get strong looks of disaproval in many areas. Dye your hair an unusualy color and no one will talk to you. CA is land of the free. UT is land of conformity.

The good news though is that only about 1/2 of the population is still LDS, so you're bound to meet many people you absolutely enjoy. Just don't knock the stereo type of "beware of UT mormons" until you've been here...it does take getting used to them. One thing I've learned is NEVER trust a mormon woman until you have known her at least 6 months. MANY of the LDS women pretend to be your friend because they are given "Service" work "callings" in their church. They are litterally told to "befriend a non-member and try to convert them." If you don't end up converting after a certain amount of time, you are no longer on their To-Do list, and you suddenly loose a "friend" for no apparent reason.

I’m just glad you’re not judgmental at all.

Boy, that does sound like good news. Anything we can do to speed up the decline in the percentage of Mormons? A “final solution” of sorts?

Good to know there is still a place in this world for a proper stereotype.

Any more hard and fast rules to live by when dealing with the “Mormons?”

Sorry to dissect your posts like this, but do you realize how absolutely crass your posts are?

After living in Utah and being LDS, I gave up and moved to California.

For me, living in Utah was a waste of my time. R

Visiting Utah and being around Mormons and living with them are two different things.

I have lived in Utah for about 14 years. I was in high school when we moved here (Air Force) and I never had a problem being ostracized because I wasn't LDS. Maybe it was because of the close proximity to the Air Force Base and the diversity that it brings. I don't know. I do know that even with that diversity, I had many more LDS friends than non-LDS and other than one girl offering me a Book of Mormon, it was never an issue. (And in that case, I just said "no, thank you" and the subject was dropped. Really not a problem.)

I don't know why a lot of people on these threads seem to be scared of the LDS. They do have a good influence on the area. It is a really clean place to live. They take pride in their surroundings and make them beautiful. All of the positives that the OP mentioned are definitely a bonus to living in Utah.

So, welcome to Utah! I'm sure you will love your experience!

You're absolutely correct. Living with them is much more enriching.

I have lived in Utah for a very very long time and I love it. Currently I reside in lehi, and will be moving more north due to a promotion. I have lived in many states and I plan to STAY in this one. I think LDS people are great, I have never been judged or judged anyone on their religious status. Every one is equal, it doesnt matter if we all believe different things. We werent put here to make enemies because of faith, we were put here to share feelings, make great friends and especially love and help everyone, Whether they are LDS, Catholic, or even homeless.
