Default Sundays in Utah

Can anyone offer why, for all practical purposes, so many offices and stores are closed on Sunday in Utah? I don't know how common it is in SLC and more populated areas. But in Cedar City and to some extent St. George, everything from barber shops, local retail and real estate offices are closed. The larger national chain stores are open, e.g. Wal-mart, Depot and Albertsons, but the locally owned businesses are not.
Are there "blue" laws still in effect? It seems ashame that on a day that aurguably represents double-digit sales numbers, along with Saturday, many businesses choose not to participate.

Nope no blue laws. What you have are LDS owners who won't work on sundays. Notice art fairs, the county fairs and such are never held on sundays? Other places have them up on sundays, but not here. Even SLC has the fair going on Sunday. YOu are just dealing with old line Mormons who still think this is 99.9% mormon area. But it is their businesses, and they can do what they want with them. If I choose to shop on Sunday, (Costco is best on Sundays) Then I go to what is open, or go to Vegas.

It's that pesky 4th Commandment. Some people still keep it.

I love the idea of businesses being closed on Sundays. When I was finishing the basement in my Highland home the contractor and I had to make many trips to Home Depot. It was so nice to see the store nearly empty and so many sales clerks available to wait on us.
When we move next year we plan to do all our shopping at Home Depot, Costco and Wal-Mart on Sundays.

Edlo, Blondie, I do agree wholeheartedly. Of course if you have a business you can do what you want with it. And if we go to town from our 30 miles out from Cedar, it's always on a Sunday to shop at national name stores. But one place you might not expect to be closed is the Sizzler Steak House. Must be a franchise owner.
Thanks, just wanted to know if it was local law or something else.

Strange the Sizzler in Cedar would close on Sunday's. It use to be the Town and Country resturant way back when. It was open on sundays in the old days.

This topic just slays me. There are six other perfectly good days to shop.

I only brought up the subject for prospective visitors to the more rural parts of Utah. People spent a lot of time planning trips and

It's actually a good question. Many move here and are upset that everything is not open on sundays. This just gives them a heads up and a why it is the way it is.

Even in Godless California, a huge number of businesses are closed on Sunday, and it has nothing to do with religion; therefore, I am surprised to discover anyone would find it unusual to discover businesses closed on a Sunday in Utah.
