Default Is Mitt Romney Related to Mormon Participants in the Mountain Meadow Massacre?

Just curious, given the Mormons' outstanding genealogical records:

Is Mitt Romney a descendant and/or related to any of the Mormon participants in the Mountain Meadow massacre?

Don't know and don't care. Why would you care? Are you looking for "dirt" on him for the campaign? I don't think, from my readings, that the names of any of them are known, except for the one who was executed. Could be wrong, not my area of expertise although I read a book about it after I moved here.

Nope, not really concerned about political "dirt", I'm a totally non-partisan type politically. Its just that the slaughter of 120ish (?) men, women and children --- with one guy punished for it, kind of caught my attention. Its more than a bit ironic that one guy was executed for the slaughter.

As for the names being known --- really --- you expect folks to believe that the participants were not known within the community? That is a bit much to believe.

Mr Romney is obviously from a prominent family within the Mormon community and I'm curious about his background. He wants to be my CIC and I'm very curious about such folks. He actually makes some serious sense (when he is not pandering to the far right) but I like to know everything I can about somebody I might vote for --- put it down to cautious curiosity.

I think she means the names weren't written down. I don't know, maybe there's a roster somewhere of who was involved.. how are we supposed to know? Given how foggy some details are about the event... that seems highly unlikely.

I have to concur that your question just doesn't smell right. How would the actions of someone's ancestors affect your opinion of that person? It's like connecting someone to slave-holding ancestors. You can tie virtually anyone to something awful. That's not right.

Well, yeah, I suspect the participants weren't real proud about it but its hard to believe that a close knit community didn't know who was involved. I tripped over the massacre reference when I did a general search on Mormon history because I've started paying attention to Mr Romney's campaign. I knew diddly squat about Mormons previously. The MM massacre sure stands out as an extreme historical event.

I've never paid much attention to the religious/political blather but with Santorum & Gingrich doing their holier than thou gig and Mr Romney silent on the subject, it caught my curiosity.

Regarding the smell of my question, it is what it is.

wouldn't they all be.....at least the ones that claim having original descendents of Utah's mormon families.

Sure the community knew who was involved but as for writing it down in a list? Seriously doubt that happened. Any written record would have been purged when Jogn D. Lee was executed.

Hundreds of years ago an Irish king was assassinated by a group that included an ancestor of mine. My ancestor struck the final knife thrust, saying as he did it "I make sure". That's the family motto passed down with the family crest. Imagine our surprise when my grandfather found that out with his genealogy hobby. As he used to say "Be careful when you look up your family tree. Someone might still be up in it"!

What I see in Mitt Romney is someone who came from a family that was very successful in business and government. Rather than living off his family he expanded on that legacy with great success of his own. Whether it's him or another we need someone who has experience running large enterprises successfully. He certainly fits the bill.

Every religion has dirt. Spanish Inquisition, Witch Trials, Vampire Trials (Yes, those too).

The only reason Mormonism gets slapped with its own is the Church is relatively young.

There is a lot of stuff, including some ugly massacres that went on in Africa, including Kenya. Did you go looking for that kind of dirt on Obama?

Nope, not really interested in "dirt" and have no political affiliation. I really couldn't care less, I'm just interested in historical facts. Mr Romney actually makes a whole lot more sense to me than any of the other candidates. But - what is his background?

I'm new to the Mormon history and was very interested in the MM massacre --- you've got to admit that it was an unusual historical event.

I find the slaughter of "Christians by Christians" an interesting historical situation in the US (as opposed to giving the Native Americans plague infected blankets). The slaughter of the Civil war was educational, but nobody said we were perfect.

That, and the fact that ONE guy was executed for the entire affair is a bit much to believe as a credible response to an organized slaughter by apparently many tens of good Christian/Mormons. That and the fact that it is a bit much to believe that the Mormon community doesn't know with great precision, who were the participants in that terrible event.

The youngest children war parceled out (subsequently recovered), the travelers goods were stolen and auctioned off and everybody went home happy --- except for the murdered folks laying in the killing fields.

Mr Romney seeks my vote for CIC --- what is his background? Is that not a fair question?
