Hi,

My wife, six-month old, and I are considering a move to Utah. We're currently in Maryland.

We are LDS and have lived in Utah before. I've lived in Ogden and Provo, but never in the Salt Lake area.

My potential job would be in downtown SLC and I'd like to have a short commute. My wife is Japanese and we're considering going to the Japanese ward which looks like its in Sugarhouse. We would need a 2 bedroom apartment and are looking to rent a place for $600-900. We want a safe and friendly community that is convenient as well.

Could any of you provide recommendations on where to live?

Also, does anyone here know about moving costs across the country? We would be moving from Maryland and would like the move to be as cheap as possible, but we can't rent a Uhaul and drive it because of our baby.

Thank you!

We rented a U-Haul and drove it with our baby. They do make them with three seats across.

If you are going to be in downtown SLC, you are not going to find much in your price range that is a short distance from downtown, unfortunately

You could get something in that price range about 15-20 minutes south of downtown. I would recommend the Murray (east of 900 east), West Jordan, or Sandy Area to get you what you want within your price range. But then again, it would leave you with quite a travel to the Japanese ward in Sugarhouse each sunday. You very likely will have to up your rental budget by a few hundred dollars if you want to be closer to the downtown area.

Thank you! I don't know how my wife would feel about taking a U-Haul, but I'll look into it.

15-20 minutes is a short commute to me. I'm currently commuting 75 minutes one way. On Craigslist it looks like there are many 2bdr apartments in our price range, but I just don't know about the neighborhoods. Should I try to stay east of 900 East in general or does it depend on the area?

The areas I'm looking at are Sugar House, Millcreek, and Holladay. Are those good? Are there any specific areas we should avoid (like close to Sugar House park, etc.)?

In SLC itself, stay east of 700 E and the further east the better. Sugar House Park is a nice area, I lived one block away and had no crime.
