Living in rural Southwest Utah is great. The scenery is outstanding almost everywhere you look. No smog to block some of the most consistantly beautiful sunrises and sunsets anywhere. We're fortunate in that we have 20 acres to do anything we want with. And crowds and traffic don't exist. I never got too involved with skiing, rock-climbing or hunting growing up in California. Not because there wasn't plenty of that available, I just didn't. But for anyone who does, Utah is world-class in all of them.
The cost of living is a fraction of what I was used to. And it's funny, a major reason for that is after living here for awhile the desire to spend the kids college money on the biggest truck, the most toys and the fanciest yard fade away.

I moved to Texas two months ago and these are the things I miss:
1) the mountains (Mostly just so I know which direction I'm driving)
2)Megaplex theatres-I have gotten to loooove reserved seating. I go to movies a lot and there is just something wonderful about buying tickets to a newly opened show online, then walzing in two minutes before it starts and being able to sit right where I want to. Plus their butter on the popcorn is outstanding! And you can buy real food there!
Hmmm. That's about it!

Oh, I know......the best thing about Utah is........
........going "home" to Wyoming. Yeah, that's it.

wow, so emotionally charged.
air quality is not an issue outside of the wasatch front where the population is booming. everywhere else in the state is pretty decent, even st george is not bad. especially if you compare it to any other state with any normal-sized cities.
i loved the comment about the drivers. i'm still laughing...
OP, what it comes down to is that many people are for or against. there are a lot of good things about the state. even the school system is not completely lost as some people would believe. i have had pretty good experiences with the utah school systems. a lot of it is what you make it out to be.
now, is there need for improvement? well, duh. of course.
but if you want a family-oriented community full of generally friendly people, and an awesome backdrop of outdoor recreation, utah is definitely the right place.
aaron out.

I love how family friendly the state is. =) & the outdoor activities.
&, LOL on the driving. Utah has the worst drivers I have ever seen. I think there is a law that says you have to scream over to the left lane on Bangerter immediately, & drive slowly there, even w/ no intentions of turning. LOL
