Poss relocation - Ogden UT or Hartford CT?
I know this is comparing apples to oranges but here goes...
On the same day my husband recieved two great job offers from two companies! One in Hartford, CT and one in Ogden, UT...so now I'm trying to decide what would be best for our family.
So - I thought I'd ask: why would I choose Utah? Pros & cons of living in Utah? What do you like / dislike about the area? Any suggestions / tips? Schools? Areas in or around Ogden to avoid?
Also, we love our large non-denominational Christian church here...will we be able to find that in the area?
We have some family in Layton and SLC & that should help but always looking for other opinions. Thanks!

Personally, I really enjoy living in Layton. Pretty much anything I need can be found in-town and if it's not here, there is SLC or Ogden that are both just a short drive away. The cost of living is ok...I'm not sure how it compares to Connecticut, but I've heard the east coast tends to be quite expensive. Like I mentioned in the other thread, I attend an awesome non-denom church in Layton which is quite large, and it is not the only church around. There are many Baptist churches in the area.
In the end, you'll have to make the decision that is best for you and your family. All in all though, Utah really is a great place to live. I think you might be surprised how nice it is.

Hartford = yuck! I've never been anywhere near Ogden, but I'd choose that over Hartford just based on weather, cost of living, has to be less traffic...

Hi, I have only lived in Utah for a month, so take this with a grain...
my two cents would be Hartford. I am from Massachusetts, and although I don't think Hartford is a great city, you at least have Boston and NYC near you.
I live about 10 miles from Ogden, and I don't see much going for the city. If you ski, well, by all means move here!
Otherwise, I say CT. More options. Sorry, I am really bummed about Utah these days, can you tell?

Ogden=Armpit of Utah
Utah is a beautiful state and has a great culture to raise a family but Ogden is a torn down shell of a city. 90% of the housing in Ogden is very old and run down looking. Ogden has the highest amount of drugs and violence in the state of Utah. Ogden isn't what I would classify as a ghetto having lived in some poor southern California cities in my life but it certainly isn't a nice town. I'd compare it most to Lodi California if you are familiar with that area.

Going to Utah...
It's official...I guess we're really going to Utah. NC was even a consideration for a short time (still think I would have liked to move there), but we accepted the offer in Ogden! I was surprised - I thought we were still considering it but I came home Friday and my husband said he told them 'yes' and signed the paperwork.
So...schools? Neighborhoods? He'll work in Ogden but that doesn't mean we have to actually live there (maybe 30-45 minute commute max though). Places to avoid? Tips for adjusting to such a new & different place?
Thanks!

North Ogden isn't bad, but i wouldn't live right in Ogden. The Layton area would probably be a good option for you, easy commute and nicer living. Kaysville isn't a bad commute, either.

PleasantView and East Layton are really nice and not far from Ogden. They are north and south respectively.

May dad worked in Ogden about 50 years ago in a Chinese restaurant. I took him back there in 2001 and again in 2005. The main street leading up to the train station is improving. There was a TV show called Everwood with Treat Williams that was filmed there. They even built a facade for the show. There are new restaurants that we tried that were actually pretty good.
When we moved to Italy four years ago, we kept getting angry that things were not as easy as in the US. The quicker you let go, the better it will be on you and your family. Ogden has some beautiful areas around it and some nice suburbs. So enjoy and good luck.
Do not wait to get down to see the National parks down in Southern Utah. They are incredible.

We will probably move to Utah before Europe, but to live in Europe would be a dream for us! How did you get to Europe?
