I don't know what the deal is with Palm trees. We are from California and didnt much care for them there. Mostly they are dirty and rats like to live in them...I just can't see why anyone would plant them in Salt Lake area...that is silly to me..doesn't fit the area at all....thanks for those pics.. i don't know how they survive that cold up there, its bad enough here...

I actually think the pine trees are dead from that pine beetle or whatever it is that is killing them all, because everything else looked normal.

Look, Dogmom, we even have palm trees up here, too! The reason I like palm trees so much is because I've lived here so long and am so used to the same trees. I'm not saying I don't like them, it's just that when you have a chance to see a palm tree, it's pretty neat. Also, being stuck in the house for 6 months during the winter, it's cool to go somewhere with palm trees. The palms probably do pretty well up here in the summer, it is really nice out!

Is that along Lake Michigan???

Hey, question...I am flying to ILL on the 4th of July and staying with my sis in Mt. Carroll for about a week and a half. We are thinking about doing an overnight in or near Chicago. Any good ideas of what to see? We are not wealthy. We were thinking the Shedd Museum? We will probably stay out in Naperville area where hubby and I stayed last winter and maybe we can take the train into downtown...

Anyway, any suggestions appreciated...thanks

The Fourth of July? That's the day we're coming back from vacation! Do you get to fly out during the night? That would be really cool, being able to see all the fireworks going on. Unfortunatly we're not. Anyway, if you guys are planning on seeing fireworks, maybe try Itasca or Glendale Heights. They are around a half hour drive from Naperville, Itasca being a bit longer, but there both worth it! (I've never seen Naperville's so I wouldn't know about theirs) For Chicago...lets see, hmmm.... have you been downtown? I'd say the Shedd Aquarium is a pretty neat place to visit. They have a cool dolphin (i think) exhibit where you sit in an ampitheater like thing overlooking Lake Michigan and watch the dolphins do tricks. The whole aquarium is deffinatly worth a visit, as are the Field and Science and Industry Museums. (I was not too into the Planetarium, but thats just me.) if I had to pick just one, though, I'd pick the Field. (History museum)

You can also have you're sister take you on a boat tour down the Chicago River and into the lake; the tour guides highlight the best architecture along the river, and then take you into a lock in order to get into Lake Michigan. After that they take the boat out a bit so you can see the entire skyline.

I have alot more things I can suggest. If you want anymore, just ask!

Thanks, I fly out of Vegas at 2 in the afternoon on the 4th, get into Midway about 7 I think...have a car rental waiting for me and will head west to Mt. Carroll, should probably take me less than 3 hours. I am hoping that along my drive that evening I can see some fireworks along the way...

I think I would like to go to the Shedd Aquarium, have you ever been to the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, CA..Awesome, and I love the idea of taking a boat tour..there's Navy Pier, too..and we have to eat genuine chicago pizza, lol.

If I think of anything else, I will let you know!
