Moving to Logan (Salt Lake City, Ogden, Brigham City: construction, school, university)

There are a number of fantastic posts on moving to Logan, but I need a little more information that I had a difficult time finding. I am looking at accepting an offer to attend graduate school at Utah State, but my wife is an engineer and will obviously need a job. Because Logan is a bit of an academic/college town, it would be nice to live near the University, but it appears that it is not a major enough hub for her to be able to find a civil engineering firm. Both Ogden and Salt Lake City have a number of firms so the major concern becomes how to live in between, but not be entirely too far away from either location. I'm not sure if this is even possible due to a number of reasons, but I figured I would ask none the less. Thanks!

You just have to figure out one thing. Which one of you wants to commute through the canyon that highway 89/91 runs through? Wellsville is fairly small town at the south end of cache valley and Brigham City is on the other side of the range. Both of you are looking at least a 45 minute commute.

There are a fair number of people in your situation. I had a number of friends that had parents that worked at Thiokol and made the commute.

Thanks for the reply. I'm assuming the canyon is hairy during the winter months? If that is the case I suppose I'd be the one stuck with the drive. 45 minutes isn't a huge huge deal considering we've both commuted about that time before, but during snow periods it will probably be more important for her to have the easier trip. We don't come from an area that has a consistent snow seasons, but neither are we completely unfamiliar with driving in snow. Unfortunately I won't be able to visit during the winter months before making the decision so I won't know what the drive is like either way.

I don't know that she would be stuck searching only in Ogden. I did a simple search and came up with a list of firms in Logan.

Thanks for the links! I'll forward them to her! The main thing is she's not necessarily a civil engineer more so than she is a structural engineer.

ATK is always hiring engineers, tend to the mechanical side. The joke out there is civil engineers build things and mechanical engineers blow them up. If you live in logan proper or anything on the north end of the valley she wouldn't have to drive the canyon. State Road 30 goes out to the west and isn't nearly as bad in the winter. There are also many vanpools and such out going out there. Not many people drive out there on their own unless they want to.
Also worth keeping in mind is that commuter rail is supposed to be up and running at least to ogden this summer and should be to brigham city soon.

Its the drivers that insist on doing 65+MPH (speed limit is 60)
they insist on driving this fast even if there is 3 inches of snow on the ground.

One thing you will quickly learn around here, is that NO BODY can drive.

Well, I agree with you on the drivers. We are always amazed at the cars who fly through the construction zone in Ogden at 80 mph. Scares the crap out of me when they fly by me.

Sardine canyon is fine most of the time. However, there were a few times this year where the blowing and drifting was so bad along with the snow coming down, we could hardly see 10 ft in front of us.

I worked for LCPD as a dispatcher (we dispatched for the entire county) - Sardine can be INCREDIBLY hairy in the winter time, Sardine is typically closed a few times during the winter.

Don't listen to these people they overreact about everything..
ask em about the winters.. they'll say "its extremely cold"
ask about the summers they say "its really hot"
Then they talk about this "inversion" that apparently socks in the valley for the
whole winter.. where you can't see the sky.
Well guess what there was a total of 3-4 days
where it was overcast, and had low lying fog.. otherwise nearly everyday all winter
was really nice unless it was snowing you could see the sky.
(try visiting anywhere back east, where you'd be lucky to have a nice clear day in the winter...)

They try to paint a bleak picture of the valley to keep outsiders from moving in.

Next they'll tell you how bad the pollution is.. of course most of these people have
never left the valley and seen what real pollution is.

So its a great valley, nice people(although a little skewed) weather is great
driving the canyon is NOT an issue.(unless you make it one by driving like them)

USU is a nice campus, but watch where you park.. the meter maids(USU police)
will get you.
