Default Dixie?

Dumb question...but why do the refer to Southern Utah as Dixie?

Because cotton was grown down there near the Virgin River. Not a dumb question.

LOL That's the reason? I always wondered too. =) I've heard of Dixie college, & thought that was it, but, duh, it must've got it's name from the area, instead of the other way around. =)

Not a dumb question.

When the pioneers came to utah was about the time of the civil war. some were sent to southern utah and found that cotton and other southern fruits and plants could be grown in the now washington county area.

The people were from the southern US areas so they named this area Utah's Dixie.

There are many businesses with the name DIXIE in them. The oldest high school is Dixie High School. Up to about 1956 Dixie High and Dixie College had the same teachers and attended the same classes. The mascot of Dixie High is abi-plane as pilots were trained at Dixie College/High School. When the two were seperated the High School kept the flier name and the college became the rebels.
