I have hesitated responding to your question because it doesn't seem like you have a certain place in mind. Tooele and Provo are quite a distance apart and though I have not lived in either, I am sure they have very different environments. I would start with a job search first and then see where that takes you. I think with any job as long as you have the qualifications they are looking for you should be fine. My daughters "crush"
(2nd grade) was half hispanic half white and I personally didn't have any problem with him or his family. Very nice family. Good luck with your search. |

I live in Stansbury Park and think this is a pretty great place to live.
You should have no trouble finding a job or friends because of your heritage. Be friendly, honest, and a hard worker and you will do fine wherever you go! |

I live in Traverse Mountain in Lehi. I am also non-mormon, but I was raised as one in utah so I do have a unique perspective.
I don't think you'll have a difficult time finding a job, but it is pretty tough to live here for little kids. My children have all had some difficulty making friends here when people find out they don't go to "the church" (here everyone assumes you belong to the mormon church). Even worse when children come to play and see our wine rack and coffee cups. We have been told by small children that we are wicked and will be punished for our horrible sins. We as parents have been told by the other parents here that their children can no longer play with use because they just aren't comfortable with the bad values we are teaching their children. On the bright side, so many houses here are forclosures, bank owned or short sales. We bought an amazing home for 200K less than the bank was owed on it. I'm not sure if that is unique to Traverse Mountain, but the entire hillside seems to be for sale. I have also met some amazing people who do not judge me for what church I attend or don't attend on Sunday. We'd love to welcome more to the area! I don't want to send a jaded message of Utah. I love it here, but I'm not going to sugar coat things...it is rough to live among the people of a predominant culture to which you do not belong. Everyone wants to belong and feel wanted and welcome. It's difficult to be an outsider. Make your decision with your eyes open. The whole block around me is open! Come on over! I'll throw my arms open wide to welcome you! |

Hi there, I am also looking to relocate for a great job in SLC. I have a 13 year old son and although my spouse was born LDS--and have a Mormon "last name" we do not go to church. I heard there are many many non-Mormons in SLC--I don't have any problem WITH Mormons except for what I read about kids not being aloud to play with non-Mos.

So we are in the same boat about having friends for our son. He is 13 and will need friends who are accepting and not exclusionary.

I know that it happens but not everybody excludes kids. I think that if they are excluding your child because they are not LDS you would not want them to be friends anyway (easier said, I know). I am LDS and my daughters best friend is not. They are attached at the hip. We took her to the zoo on Friday and they took our daughter to dinner and a movie on Saturday. Our daughter even slept over from Saturday to Sunday, although I was a little hesitant, only because we do try to keep Sunday a little different than every other day of the week and I didn't want her to think it was another play day (sorry for the sidetrack). I would hope that my view is not unique but the others actions are. I do know that someone had the experience you are describing with their kids and it was in Cranberry Hills in Sandy, so maybe steer clear. Good luck and once again if you moved next door to me I would also welcome you with open arms and maybe a casserole :-)

WHen it comes time to date, your children will not be asked out by any LDS kid. They don't date until age 16, I believe, but any "good" Mormon is only going to marry another Mormon. And since they marry early (early to me), there' no time to waste dating someone not eligible to marry. Your child would have to convert to marry, i.e., Ann Romney was not LDS when she met Mitt Romney. If they do convert and marry in the Temple, you will not be able to attend the ceremony. If you plan on staying here more than a few years, you have to think "down the road" for your children.

Maybe you should have told that to my two sisters (we are a Catholic family) who both married Mormon boys and my brother who married a Mormon girl.
