Dog Loving Family Moving to Sandy, Jordan area
Hello All,
I would first like to say that this forum is terrific. I have gotten such a great feeling on our move after reading this and then visiting Utah and putting 800 miles on the rental car.
Some background..My family consists of my husband and I and our 3 boys ages 14, 10, 8 and three dogs (I am a dog agility competitor).
I am trying to make my plan for my next trip out to do some serious house hunting. MY DH is starting job at ATK at there baccus plant and we looked around for a few days in the Sandy, West Jordon, South Jordon areas on up through Layton. I-15 traffic ICK! so we are definately staying below SLC.
I was told at Daybreak that some municipalities would only allow 2 dogs unless i had a Kennel license? Can anyone give more details on this? Also can anyone stear me clear of any not so desirable public schools or give any positive recommendations for any schools. I only have about a month to find a neighborhood i like and where the schools are decent and they won't freak over my wonderfully behaved pups. I would prefer .50 acre lots but seem to be having a hard time staying in my budget. $1500-1800 per month.
Any way i am looking forward to our move to UTAH even though we are not LDS. My brother who coincidently is the bishop at the LDS church here in FL, gave me some great advice so i thought i would share. My plan is to call the local bishop when i get my home choosen, introduce myself as a non-mormon but a great neighbor looking to meet other great neighbors and friends for our family. I am sure if we are friendly then they will be too.
Thanks in advance for any tips !

Have you considered Stansbury Park in Tooele County? I live there and I have three dogs and don't have a problem at all. There are also some .50 acre lots out here too. Are you looking to rent or buy? The commute to ATK isn't that bad at all from this way. Stansbury has two elementary schools and a brand new high school set to open a year from this fall.
It would take about 20-30 minutes to commute to ATK from here. Housing prices are less than in Salt Lake and there is more open land for you to train your pups. BTW-if you end up out here, I would LOVE to watch them!!
Tooele County as a whole has a very rural feel, although Stansbury is very much surburban.

I’d probably look in South Jordan (outside of Daybreak) or Herriman or Tooele County. It is a pretty easy drive to the said facility from those locations and there are some large lots. I myself live 5 miles from ATK Bacchus. Most of the lots in my neighborhood are from .25 to .50. It’s a pretty nice neighborhood, but lately there have been problems with vandalism. Hopefully they catch the kids responsible.

There are a few places with .50 lot size, in Sandy, but not very many with that price range in mind. Each city has different restrictions. Our friend that lived in Lehi could have more animals because it was zoned differently. At our old house we were allowed 2 dogs (although we did have 3 most of the time). The only time anyone complained was when we had some puppies that were about ready to be sold and they would get loud right before feeding time. In the area we used to live in the kennel license or hobby license was not available. It will really depend on the city.

Thank you all for your information. I like the Tooele Idea Kaytidid. I have been checking that out all day. I saw some negitive stuff online about the high school there, but i have no idea how accurate that is. Grantsville looks promising too. CoolCats what neighborhood are you in that close that has .25 -.50 acres? I missed that one. We did drive through some new home development near the plant when we visited but they were Zero lot line.

Eh, any high school can have some negative connotations sometimes, and Stansbury High hasn't opened yet, so that is still all positive *wink*. I don't know where you are moving from, but we moved from NJ 14 years ago and Utah high schools are still pretty tame compared to some of them back east. I have lived in Tooele County for 7 years now, (7 prior to that in West Valley) and haven't heard of much negative in any of the high schools out here. Both of my brothers and one of my sisters graduated from Grantsville High and they enjoyed it. My brother in law graduated from Tooele High and he liked it there too.
Let me know if I can provide you with any information about Tooele! I wouldn't want to live any place else in the state! Best of luck with your move.

Too late to edit my other post, but also Lake Point would be a great option for you. Not quite as far in as Stansbury and Tooele, but there is more land there. Lake Point has a rural feel. Many people have horse property. Kids there are bussed to Stansbury schools.

I live near 7200 West and 2800 South. My subdivision is called “Sugarplum.” There is another one between called Hunter Village between 7200 West and 6400 West and 3100 South and 3500 South. I’d say that is even a tad nicer. You do have to deal with the West Valley stigma a bit, but it’s pretty nice – not too built up or old. There are several ATK workers in these neighborhoods. Some of the older houses are even on 1-acre plus, including those across the street from myself.
You could also find houses with .25-size lots around 7800 South and 4800 West in West Jordan. Those are nice new neighborhoods that would put you within about 5 miles / 10 minutes of the ATK plant. I’d strongly consider those areas or South Jordan if working at the Bacchus plant. There are a couple people I know who commute down from Ogden and it is a bear for them.

Excellent suggestions I am thrilled with my choices. I am going to have good fun looking next month. Now to find a nice landlord who is a dog fan. I am not so sure i want to buy right out of the gate especially not before the house here sells. The florida market is terrible so we are hoping for the best. Thanks for all the advice and feel free to pass on anything else you can think of.
