To answer this question. Logan/Cache Valley is incredibly safe. In fact, it was rated No. 1 safest U.S. Metropolitan Area for 2007, according to City Crime Rankings: Crime in Metropolitan America. From Logan, you have access to TONS of hiking and biking trails, some really close to town (Green Canyon) and lots more in Logan Canyon.
Housing is affordable here, but incomes are a lot lower than other places too, so that can be an important factor (is for me, may not be for others). Some of the homes in the historic district are really pretty, and low cost (but need a bit of work).
I was really worried about the mormon/non mormon potential issues too, especially after reading some posts on here. As a whole, my neighbors are really nice to us, and have never had anyone be really outright rude to me because of my (lack of) religious beliefs. I did work in one job where when some of the coworkers found out I was non-mormon sat around whispering and looking at me. It annoyed me at the time, but now I just chalk it up to rude people, not rude because of their religion. There were instances too, where people talk about the church openly in the office, and while I do understand that the church is a big part of people's lives, it was an adjustment to hearing people talk about church all the time!
Logan is also definitely a conservative town. I got and still do get LOTS of stares when I wear my tank tops to the grocery store - that I just find funny. I also need to wear more modest shirts to work (which is funny, in my almost 10 years of work experience, no boss has ever told me to wear more modest clothing) as to not offend the students. I do what the boss says, well because she is the boss, but I still find it a bit weird. And no, I was not flashing cleavage or wearing really low cut tops, just not what is the norm around here. Lots of really young families here too - and it seems like it would be a good place to raise kids.

I lived in Logan for 5 years and moved back to NM to be near family. BIGGEST mistake of our lives. Logan is a great place, I am non morman but they are some of the best friends I have ever had. Great place to raise kids, crime is almost non existant, so much to do if you like the outdoors. I worked at the Chamber of Commerce. Go to there website for all kinds of information. Cache Chamber of Commerce. The main page has not to much info but there is a links page that should be very helpful. If you go to Logan stop by the Chamber's office on Main St across fr the historic court house which has the Visitor's center. I am going to move back the next chance I have, never should have left!!

Well, as long as your not STUPID when riding your bike, it's definitely easy to walk and ride to places. (A lot of bikers there don't realize they have to abide by the street laws as well - and they run stop signs and other things like that.) I have a legally blind brother who walks and rides his bike almost everywhere. (Don't ask me how he can ride his bike through town, I'm clueless.) Also, CVTD is free (the public bus system). Just today my brother went from 1300 East 100 South to WalMart (Main Street just after 1400 North) and back home in a couple hours. Also, when my husband and I were first married we lived near the hospital, and we were able to walk to work, WalMart, Lee's Marketplace, our bank, and a half dozen other places.

As long as he doesn't work for ERA I'd love to get his number from you.

I can only learn so much about a town from a forum. Thanks for all the help.

Is it a real Holiday or just a day off for Banks and Schools?

It's a real holiday, with fireworks and most local businesses give their employees the day off as well. If you work for a more national company you'll have to work. But last year I was working for Qwest on the 24th and they fed us lunch, have a drawing to give away a TV and some other stuff (i wanted the TV) and did a bunch of other stuff throughout the day.

My girlfriend and I are looking at moving to Logan as well. We recently returend from a road trip to Logan and a handful of other places in the Mtn west. We absolutely loved Logan for all the obvious reasons and it is at the top of our list. My girlfriend is hispanc,we are both left leaning politically and socially (vote Obama) and neither of us is religious. Our only concern about the Logan area is how conservative and relisious the area seems to be. Is it really an issue? There seems to be so much contradicting dialog in these forums in reguard to these issues. Both of us are very social and like meeting new people and entertaining, how hard will this be for us? It seems from reading through these forums there are a number of people relocating to Logan, (or thinking about it). We currently live in the southeast, and racism, and discrimination are one of the many factors that has facilitated our desire to be/move somewhere else and potentially raise kids. The fact that Logan's crime rate is so low is very appealing, but if my kids are potentially ostricised in school for not being religious im not sure it is worth the trade.
We both love Logan and more likely than not will move there within the next six months. I hope it is everything that I have built it up to be in my head!
