Question Best Time to Move

I'm considering a move to Utah this Summer. It is certainly the ideal time to move from Washington - no chance of snow in the passes!
But what about moving at the beginning (1st week) of October? What's the snow like in Utah at that time?

Would I be crazy to consider driving 800 miles through the passes when there could be snow?

Thanks!

There usually isn't snow in Utah until early Nov. and then it doesn't last much until Dec. I think the fall would be a fine time to move. It might get a bit sticky through the passes but I don't think you'd have a problem. My family has drove down here from Canada many times and different times of year and it was all good.

I think you will be ok. A few years ago I was driving through Central Washington’s passes in October and there had been an inch or so of snow the night before. It was a bit hairy for about 30 miles. I just slowed down and made it ok.

That said, I've driven through Steven's Pass in December with no problem. You just have to time your trip to avoid the middle of a big storm.

But on the drive from Washington to Utah, once you get past the Blue Mountains in Oregon, there really aren’t any more high passes.

Interstate 70 through Colorado can be ugly if a snow storm happens to hit. I was stuck in one around the 8th or so of October one year. I had to delay my drive back to Utah because I-70 westbound out of Denver was closed. I believe they closed the eastbound portion the day before that.

But the first part of October would most likely be a good time to move weather wise in Utah.

That's great news. Timing the move has been a little stressful; I always feel like I have a small window of opportunity. If I don't bite the bullet and move before end of October I'll probably have no choice but to wait until mid-spring, when the snow starts to melt.

I'll most likely drive SE across Washington on 84 heading down Idaho and right into South Ogden/South Weber.

Thanks for all your input.

My bad. I should've paid closer attention to your post. You typed Washington and I read Washington, DC. Oops! Have a safe trip and I hope all goes well.
