Default Violent Utah

I just thought I'd throw this in, see what you Utahns think about this.

Quote:
Powered by big gains in Happy Valley and Little Dixie, the state of Utah had a 5 percent jump in crime last year, with violent crime increasing by twice that.
While in 2007 Salt Lake City and a few of its suburbs experienced a decrease in the number of crimes committed, the state saw every violent category increase compared to 2006, according to figures released Monday by the Utah Bureau of Criminal Identification. The overall increase is the biggest one-year jump this decade.
Quote:
But it was violent crime that made the outburst in 2007, increasing 10.24 percent from a year earlier. Robberies had the biggest increase at 16.5 percent.
The figures released Monday measure only the number of crimes and not the per capita rate. Cities in Utah County and southwest Utah posted some of biggest gains in crimes reported. Those areas have had a population growth in recent years.
In Cedar City, crime increased 9.5 percent. In St. George, the gain was 36.7 percent.

On a lighter note, 50 illegal alien gang members have been arrested last week. It is good to see how so many people feel so strongly about crime and gang violence.

Well, I guess this does not concern too many of you. Which is good. Hopefully this is just a rare occurance, and the crime rate will drop back to normal by next year.

Hey boy, I grew up 3 miles from Chicago. Kinda why I moved here 35 yrs ago.
Wanna talk about YOUR crime rate? Have any stats to brag about?

As far as crime here, well it was not always as bad as you would make it sound. I for one would point fingers at drugs, illegals, alchohol, refugees, deadbeat parents, homeless, and so on.
Pretty much the same scenario in any big city, huh

And yeah, it concerns me...but I like the fact that my neighbors are LDS

Interesting that most of the people I see in the news being arrested for crimes are white males.

Illinoisboy, crime is not necessarily a by product of a hispanic community. I would point fingers at the meth addicts in this state. I find that in areas where there is very little diversity, people always seem to assume that it is those of a different ethnicity who are involved in criminal activity, even when it is just not the case.

Last fall, there was some sort of drive by shooting in southern Cache Valley, people making comments in the local paper were all carping about the illegal immigrants causing increase in crime. Well, in fact, the actual perps were white teenagers shooring at hispanics who by the way had legally immigrated here.

but it must have been the hispanics' fault though, right. kinda like it is the fault of the kid that got picked on in school for being smaller than everyone else.

to some people, reality matters less than their inherited biases and perceptive problems.

I came from the area of the most violent city in the US..yup Baltimore City. I didn't live in the city, but I know enough of that area to say that Salt Lake is nothing in crime compared to there.

I don't know if there even was an increase in crime per capita. The part stated that this was raw numbers, not per capita. With all the growth it seems to me the crime may be just what it was per capita. I'd like to see the per capita stats before worrying about it!

Well this transplant from Michigan may get slammed for this. But most of the violent crime I see on the TV and papers in Utah (I live in Salt Lake City) is usually involving Illegal aliens, Mexican/hispanic or pacific islanders. It's pretty sad, actually.

Really? Because a LOT of the violent crime I have seen reported on TV is by those darn white people.
