no silly–it's because the mormons are trying to get rid of all of their normormon and nonutah mormon neighbors by praying for bad sunburns. it'll be the next statewide miracle, right next to the seagulls.

Lost me on these last entries....
On another note, I would only want people who will preserve the natural beauties of UT to move there and not destroy them. I can see why some people do not want too many newcomers... but don't let simple idiots make everyone seem bad. Enforce public caning... (J/J)

My opinion
I just wanted to give my opinion of Utah.. coming from a wife and mom of 3 young boys that moved here recently from Florida, just north of West Palm in search of a better IT job for her husband and choosing UT because his family lives here. We were in a very similar situation. It took my husband about a year to convince me to move to UT.. I mean, where's Utah??
It has it's pro's and cons. Pro's: The scenery is beautiful.. I mean breathtaking. If you love to camp or fish it's wonderful. The people here are mostly very nice. The crime rate is low. After growing up in Fl, I had to laugh at the nightly news being that a simple bar fight or a kid selling a dime of weed was actually news, whereas, in FL a portion of the day's murders didn't get covered due to time restraints. The majority of the Salt Lake valley is also very clean. You get a feeling that your city is well taken care of, something I didn't feel in FL. The schools, while not perfect, are better then Florida's.. as are the sports and rec programs much better. The IT industry is very strong, but the cost of living, compared to other places with an industry, is still rather low. In FL, my husband and I both had to work to get by. But here we can afford to live quite comfortably in an upper-middle-class neighborhood even with my staying home with the boys.
Now the cons: While all the Mormans that I've come in contact with are very nice and helpful.. about all they will do is come in contact. Don't expect to be invited over for BBQ's or sewing circles. That's all done and set up with their wards. If there is a "neighborhood" BBQ or easter egg hunt you will be invited and you will have a nice time, but don't expect to make any life long friends. This has been the hardest for me. If your wife plans on staying home with the kids, she can expect to be rather lonely for quite a while. It's not easy to make friends if your non morman housewife in Utah. So my advice is choose your neighborhood very carefully. My boys haven't had any school issues, but they are still young, and the mormon kids in the neighborhood do play with them.. that 10 minutes a day they are allowed to go out and play between church activities and Lord knows what else. I was actually on the pc and found this post because my 7 year old wants to join boy scouts, but I can't seem to find a troop that isn't controlled by the church. That was very disapointing and it rather upsets me that one religion feels that it can take over something such as scouts, which should be for everyone. Another con is the state stores... having to drive 15 minutes away to get a bottle of wine to go with dinner is annoying, but something you get used to, you learn to stock up. If I were younger, without kids, I might go crazy, but being a parent the liquor laws don't bug as much.
All in all though.. i do like it better here then FL.. but that's mostly for the kid's sake. I like them in a clean, low crime area with decent schools and a good sports program.
As for places to live. Park City is very nice and more liberal then most of the state.. but if you work in the valley you will take the chance of the 80 being closed in the winter, you'll have tons of snow, and it's more expensive to live there. Sugar house or 9th and 9th are great areas... mostly non-mormon liberals. They are close to down town and the U, but the houses are older and a bit more expensive, mostly small with detached garages. I've lived on the west side of the valley, the border of Riverton and Herriman, and it was almost entirely mormon, and no offense please, kinda hick-ish. South Jordan isn't bad, but not the best either. The school board just split and if you ask me, you want to be in the Sandy, Draper, Cottonwood heights area if you can't afford Sugar house or Park City. That's the new school district and it will be better funded then the west side. Also, this area is attracting more people from out of state. I currently live in Draper and I'd say 1/2 my neighbors are Mormon, the other 1/2 had moved in from CA or the east coast like us. I didn't read all the other posts.. but PLEASE, if someone says that north of the valley or south of the valley or even anyplace further west then South Jordan is fine.. DO NOT believe them. Trust me.. if your worried about the church stepping on your life here, you will be MISERABLE anywhere out of or on the west side of the valley. We almost moved to the American Fork/Orem area and now we couldn't imagine living there.
Well.. good luck in whatever you decide. I hope this was helpful

If I can convince her (wife), I would consider Draper and the nearby areas.
I know we could not afford Park City and my wife does not want a very old home. That is unless, we win the powerball or lottery!! LOL

Better play it in Florida then. Not much chance of winning the Utah lottery!

We do play every now and then. It is fun and like everyone else, we hope and pray to win.
I guess there is no get rich quick with a lottery in UT!!
If I move there, I would ask for one. Just think of the good that can be done with money collected.

You are preaching to the choir, to be sure. Lots of people have brought up the point that the revenue would do the state some good. It has been shot down a few times.

If too much lottery is what is being avoided, then ya'll should just get on Powerball and nothing else (at least for starters).
