New Iron County Taxes
Anyone else in Iron County (Cedar City, Beaver, Parawon etc.) find it somewhat interesting to find the tax assessment on their property increase 1000%. We have twenty acres. Twenty rural, sagebrush covered, miles from the highway acres that just went from $3,000 assessed value per five acres to $30,000. Rumor has it, and it's just rumor, that there's a developer who what's to build some humongous project but doesn't want to pay for the streets, sewer, lights etc. that go with it.

Aerorick, I have 20 acres west of you, taxes did not go up. I know that every 4 years they reassess the values. Did yours change from agricultural to residential? I have yet to read about the recent meeting they had in Parowan, I heard they had to move it to the fairgrounds because over 500 people showed! Knowing our fine local paper, probably will have to wait until the county publishes the meeting notes! Curious about that rumor? Developer here in the valley or in Cedar?

The jest of it is the county want to raise the property taxes of rural residents for services we don't have. This is apparently against the spirit if not a violation of a recently passed code. It's one thing to pay for existing and ongoing services, e.g. fire, police/sherriff, ambulance, paved streets and maintenence etc. when you live in a town. But outside of the sheriff we don't have any of those other services, at least not within 45 minutes and we shouldn't have to pay for them. It's one of the trade-offs for the freedom of living rural.

I should have also included city water hook-ups, electricity and sewer.

We're 6 miles north of Beryl Junction and our taxes went up about 25% thanks to the "Municipal Services Tax" that was added.
The road in front of our house is NOT maintained by the county. We have no street lights. No city water, sewer, or parks. The last time we called for emergency services for a car that rolled on the county maintained road, it took nearly an hour for the sheriff to arrive.
For the life of me, I can't imagine what they're using our tax money for. Oh, and they manage to grade the sand from the ditches back onto the road about every 6 months. Talk about add to the dust problem?

Well, well... looks as though the county is trying to "show good faith". We've seen the Iron County Sheriff patrolling 4800 weekly now for the past month. Funny though, he only seems to show up during the day, and really... what's he gonna find other than the 20 neighbors who drive this road daily?
