Default Housing near the 'U' campus

I was just wondering what the housing is like around the University area, and whether it would be suitable for a young married couple with no kids, but 2 dogs (basically children). My main queries were:
How much am I looking at for rent?
Comparing 1 and 2 bedroom places?
Chances on having no worries with pets?
How safe is the area?
...and basically anything else you know about the area.
Thanks a heap,

The area around the U is very safe, but very expensive (older established homes). Rental units are everywhere around the U. Most the units tend to be on the Southern and Western sides of campus. None of my friends had pets while we went to the U, so I can't help you out there. There are a billion young couples around the U.

When you say 'very expensive' how much am I looking at mate? I'm living in SoCal right now, close to Santa Barbara so I think anything will seem cheap for starters, if ya know what I mean...

Well compared to Santa Barbra, Federal Heights "above the U" would be considered affordable lol. I guess I'm speaking in relative terms. My wife and I looked at a newly built townhome off South Temple and 1000 East and they were asking $675-750k for a 2000-2500 sq ft place. For that much money on the other side of the valley you could have some horse property and a very large home. We live in East Millcreek (84109) which is a bit less expensive than the area around the U and homes built in the 1940's ~1400 sq go for $300K+

Are you going to be a student at the U? My roomates and I rented a 2 bed 2 bath condo for about $1000-1200 /month shared on 100 South and 1100 East (Arlington Place) 5 years ago. You could find housing from $650 to 1500+/ month depending on the size.

Check this website out http://extras.sltrib.com/homeprices/ for a complete trend per zipcode.

Yeah, i'm looking to start school there in the fall and i'm trying to find out as much as I can about it so I can be reasonably well prepped before I get there. I have only ever driven through SLC but it looked beautiful, and i've heard the people are nice and it is (relatively) affordable.
Also, my wife will likely be working at the hospital there so it will really help us out if we can find somewhere close by...even within walking distance. We need to look at something between $800-$1k per month, i'd think.
But get this...we pay $2050 per month here near Santa Barbara and we get a 1 bedroom on a duplex with a yard and a garage...i'd really like to at least halve that , it makes it tough to get by...
What did you think of the U when you went there? I am studying in the geog department, and the people I have talked to in that area seem really nice and easily available to talk to...

I loved the U! I studied Engineering so I spent most of my time on the North side of campus. The eingineering dept is probably the most diverse on the campus.

A UTA TRAX line goes right up to the Univeristy of Utah Hospital and Primary Children's Med Center. Tons of buses go there also. You could look into University Housing. It's really cheap, but not very nice. You'd have to call the U housing people for pricing. I would personally look for a nice condo for rent. Check Arlington Place on 1100 E and 100 South to see if anyone is renting.

urban nomad is on a distinguished road
I live in the University Historic District (not Federal Heights), but I own a house. From my conversations with students, I gather the rent to be anywhere from $750 (cheap) to $2000 for a 2-3 bedroom apartment with 1-2 bathrooms, depending on how nice and how much of a view you have - definitely cheaper than you have experienced. Houses sell for about $250K - $750K in my neighborhood. I was never a student here, but my husband is a professor. He would probably say that student life is rather quiet, which may be good for an engineer. I would disagree with the assertion that the engineering department is "diverse". It's almost exclusively white and male.

Are you refering to the Professors or Students in the engineering dept? I stated that the engineering department is probably the "most" diverse student wise, which is not saying much for Utah. I'm not white and I felt very comfortable in all my classes at the U. I attended both Undergrad and Grad school at the U so that was my personal perspective. Urban is there a more diverse dept that I'm missing?
