The cost of living is high here in UT??? Rents and house prices are a good 30% - 40%+ less than where I came from, not to mention everything else (besides gas), and since everything is so close I don't use much of that. There are cheaper places than here, but this is hardly what I'd call an expensive area. Cost of living was on my short list of reasons to move here.

Could this be some of that famous Utahn tolerance that we love so much? We all have the right to express our opinions...that is the point of the forum is it not? And the topic is "Ten worst things about living in Utah". You're free to start the topic "I love Utah!". I have found that people who have opinions that differ with the majority here (in Utah) are highly discouraged from voicing their dissent. I guess they call this "Happy Valley" for a reason...

I respectfully disagree somewhat. There is a point where the complaining becomes excessive and unproductive. Some people, not all, come on here and want to complain about everything – the street sytems, their neighbors, the weather, the traffic, the driving, the culture, the inversions, too many church buildings, the wrong kind of restaurants, the wages, the TV channels, too many kids, the schools.
That kind of complaining probably occurs in 50 different forums for 50 different states on this site. But then there is the “Mormon” factor, where some people, not all, manage tie every single problem to the “Mormons.” I think that is not unlike racial stereotyping, where it’s easier to overlook individuality and attribute all the problems to unfairly to one group. And that engenders defensiveness from those of us who happen to be Mormons.
So in short, I don’t think its wanting to gloss over problems or quiet dissent so much. It’s just fatigue, at least for me. Unfortunately perhaps that means that I become too defensive too quickly, and don’t listen to people’s legitimate complaints. And for that I apologize.

This is a very good point, and I'm glad you brought it up. Thanks for saying this.
I think that there are times when things get a little extreme on both sides in this forum. One side is outraged, and the other gets defensive.
For the ones who come and complain, I have total empathy for, (and I even have to chuckle sometimes, because it reminds me so much of me when I first got here) I know they're frustrated, and confounded, and having issues with culture shock, and it's not something that goes away in 2 weeks, it takes time. Hopefully things will get easier for them as time passes, but sometimes just being able to vent, and to know that others have had to deal with the same things too, helps calm it down and validates it for them.
But, on the other hand, when you live someplace you truly love, and are a part of the majority religion, in a extremely religious place, this is your home. These people are your family and friends, teachers, neighbors and mentors. I'm sure these complaints and comments, using the religion as a scapegoat, can get old, and may at times even seem as personal attacks. This is your "home", after all. Ones natural instict is to protect that which they care for. And, I can only guess that after being "attacked" from time to time,(maybe more than less) that perhaps some see attacks, when truly, none was meant.
Sometimes, you just need to step back, and see both sides.

Gee was that towards me coolcats??? I personally am negative about this state and I probably won't ever like it here because this type of atmosphere and culture is NOT for me....maybe I would like it here if it were perhaps a state I would have wanted to vacation to and so forth..but no it has never ever come out of my mouth I wanted to be here or visit like I have said endlessly over and over again...we are already looking to move to Nevada because my husband is done here already as well

Nah, but I heard it's nice and a popular tourist spot for the surrounding areas. I'd assume it's nicer than Wendover anyway as it's out in the middle of nowhere while Atlantic City is on the shore.

But Wendover is sure a fun little get away if you want to get out of the state for a weekend. They actually have an interesting museum there. As you may know that is where the Enola Gay was many many years ago, when the base there was active.

You're right, it is the point of this thread. But threads like this do get tiresome, and I think it is somewhat unproductive to dwell on the negative so much. I would think that would make people who hate it here feel even worse. But that's their choice, I suppose.
I'm not sure what you mean by opinions that differ from the majority - what is the opinion of the majority? I don't even know. I feel like the forum is a mixture of people who love it here, hate it here, and those who are in the middle. What you said is just as true in reverse. If someone starts an "I love Utah" thread it will quickly be filled with people talking about how much they don't love it.
As for Utahn tolerance, I just moved here from NJ & have no reason to have any loyalty to Utah. Yet I find myself defending it quite a bit because the negativity I read so much in here does not echo the attitudes of the people I meet, who all seem to love it here. Sure there are problems, just like anywhere else, but it's a shame if people get turned off to the place after reading all the complaints, not realizing that the whole area isn't full of miserable people who just wish they could leave.
