Why are they here? How did they choose Utah? When I wonder or ask, it is out of genuine interest, it is not a judgement. Possibly when other people ask, it is a judgement. But I am not alone in being interested and concerned. I definately feel that people of other cultures add to Utah's fabric. I like having them as neighbors, I wish I had more for neighbors. I want to be invited to your events, I want to learn from you.

Hello,
I hope things are quite good for you too.
Same here I am interested in people myself.
May I ask are you a southern-Cali-ESCAPEE?

It seems like many are spooked when they see a dark skinned minority in Utah. It's like dude, why are you here? Don't you know there is nothing here for minorities. I came here to escape you I hope you know...

That is the crux of the matter.
The ones that ask me are white people scratching their heads thinking
"Since I cant make it here as a genuine white person there is no way you as a minority have that midas touch to turn these mountain rocks HERE into bread and gold."
" If I cant do it then there is no way you can do it... NO WAY"

As you see many Utahns and non MINORITY residents probably looked at their jobs and see hardly any minorities anywhere around. That of their friends see the same, etc, etc.
If you dont see them around the feeding trough (9-5ver) then there is simply no way a minority can make ends meet in Utah.
An illegal immigrant can and you like most Utahns understand why....
So no need to waste your precious question time on them....

I dont see you asking as the problem but the crux of the matter you are not the FIRST and you will not be the LAST to ask the question.
You might be the HUNDREDTH person to ask that question?
        NEXT
I dont know how you can tell who is a foreigner or not without actually living in vicinity and interacting each day. The lines of foreign and so called naturalized are being blurred each day.
I am glad you show interest in such but with an influx of residents into Utah from different states (with enormous racial experience) and those on so called home terror- tory I dont think this will be possible to say the least.
Alot of white people are really not making it in Utah (both resident and out of towner). It seems like they are drifting until something happens like if Mormons round them up and show the the next promise land.

I do believe minorities living in Utah are tolerated instead of embraced and carefully watched in all their doings.
Even if they pick their nose there is those cold stares everywhere.

can i ask where you are from?
i am not sure if you have already covered that or not; i certainly am not the most perceptive individual around.
i still don't get exactly where you are coming from on some of these issues, especially referring to me as a missionary. is that cuz i was asking the questions, or because of the way i asked the questions? i would (based off of the way i am interpreting, and quite possibly erroneously interpreting) disagree with you. i don't ask questions of people to be a good missionary. i ask questions to get to know people, to sate my desire to learn about other people and other places, and to be friendly. admittedly, one of my reasons for striking up conversations with people is because sometimes they look lonely or bored or depressed, but again that is not to be a good missionary, just to help someone out who might be having a bad day.
aaron out.

This is terrific reading everyones opinions. I have a very dear friend possibly moving to Salt Lake City to work at a Hilton there. She would be coming right out of college and it is pretty scary not knowing anything about the area, so this is pretty informative to pass on.

times have changed
i've lived in utah my whole life. SLC and really most of metropolitan Utah has greatly diversified. There are people of every culture and race. If there is racism, then it is on a small level that could be found literally anywhere in the US
I agree, Utah is paradise!!

i disagree
i truly have never seen that "grumpy" or "rude" side of UTah. In fact, i've seen that in other places, people are less likely to help you or reach out to you. I think that being corteous is much more normal in /utah so people are much less observant of it as it is natural

I have never been to Utah, but I have a friend who has been to Utah. Accodring to him, if a black person ever did go to Utah, he/she would get stared at with the "what are you doing here" look.

I hope so. If I do go to Utah and I don't get stared at like some kind of alien, then I will be a happy man. If I get stared at like some kind of alien, then I will remember my friend's words and realize he did come here so that is how is knows, and if that is the case, then that is very sad because no one should have to worry about getting stared at like an alien because he/she looks different than everyone else. A person should be able to live where he/she wants.

dear, in Utah, you need to have blond hair and blue eyes to be considered a human being in the full sense of the word!
If you are not, be a MORMON because the faith would turn you a bit "whiter" in the course of your life and definetely in the celestial kingdom.
Pick somewhere else dear!
