My wife is from Guatemala and went to BYU for 5 years. She said she never experience racism in the form of name calling or discrimination, but time and again the people there were cold at best and she constantly got the feeling that she wasn't welcome.
I visited and noticed it as well. To say it is ONLY racism simplifies it. When you aren't raised around minorities I think whether you know it or not you act differently. And I have never seen so many white people in my life. I'm white but it still made me feel a little wierd.
Now we live in Seattle and she appreciates the diversity and doesn't feel like an outsider.

There are people of every culture but only one of each! I have said it before but I have never seen so many white people. Well, maybe in Idaho as we were driving through to Utah from Seattle. Even in Salt Lake, although there were more Hispanics than in Seattle.

My answer to the question: Yes, quite a bit so, especially if you look hispanic or are hispanic.

I have visited Ogden, UT, which is about 25% Hispanic, i felt very comfortable. I did notice some anglo people around in that area, and they did seem a little rude to me when they realized i spoke spanish. It is not as bad as some of these people are making it out to be. I grew up in Los Angeles, and that was really bad, then i moved to Phoenix, AZ, that was the absolute worse! Ogden, UT seems like a dream come true. Who cares what other people think of you and what you look like. Its their loss if they don't take the time to get to know you.
No one can take anything away from you unless you allow them to.

Is there racism in Utah? Yes.
Is there racism everywhere? Yes.
Is the racism in Utah as high as racism elsewhere in the States? Definately not.
All depends where you're coming from.

Absolutely Not!
Absolutely not, and this is coming from an East Indian with dark tanned skin. I am from Britain with a strong British accent and I visited many parts of Utah a week ago, as part of a tour of the western united states, and went through the towns of Wendover, Tooele, Salt Lake City-Ogden-Provo, and down to Cedar City, St George, Moab Arches and Bryce Canyon, even taking on country towns of Eureka, Goshen, Nephi and Maryvale where I stopped and shopped, and at no point did I get disoriented looks or comments, just people recognising that I did not speak english with an american accent and curious to why i was taking in utah as opposed to california or nevada, in fact, I have been welcomed more in this state then any I have visited, and I have been subjected to more racism in the United Kingdom. If I could move and work here, I would, it seems like the perfect place to make a decent living and start a family, and I feel as if Utah sometimes gets unfair press it does not deserve.

Exactly! It all depends on your own experience... I come from a horrible background as far as crime and violence and overpopulation, and Utah is wonderful in my eyes. You can choose to be polite to prejudice and racist people and that makes YOUR life a lot easier. It makes you a patient person, therefore a happier and productive human being. It depends on whether you let negative people affect you. If you choose to let it bother you then it will and thats the road most people hastily chose to take. If you take the high road then you turn your journey to a win/win situation.
I guess what I'm trying to say is live and let live, and that you don't appreciate something unless you have had worse.
