Yeah I was thinking the same thing. My wife and I go for walks in Liberty Park occasionally and the hippies are there like clock work. They keep to themselves and look like they are having a great time. The drums are fun to listen to and the people are dancing.

Everyone of the rockymountain states is pretty conservative. The more out in the boonies you are the more conservative it gets. I don't think there is such a thing as a place that is wild and secluded AND liberal and progresive. Like I said washington state or oregon is probobly your best bet.

Default Thinking of Utah?

You might love Utah, but then again you may not. The state is 60% LDS. But most these folks are alot cooler than they are given credit for. Also the state has a great underground culture b/c of how conservative the general pop is. You need to be open to peoples differences if your going to live here and I find most people are. You would probably love Moab (in Grand county - only 24% LDS and therfore more liberal). The scenery is amazing red rocks and rivers, it's pretty warm in the winter and the recreation opportunity is acknowledged world wide. This is one great thing about Utah, most people don't realize how diverse it is. If your no longer interested in Utah perhaps Missoula, Montana. It's an up and coming liberal community that has opportunity for everyone.

you could also try spingdale... i find that when a community is based around tourism the influx of people from different cultures tend to live in the area and therefore a more accepting community. this town lies outside of zion park, tends to have a lot more liberal open minded and less jugemental people , (some who have dreadlocks too). in my experience i have found that the town is full of wonderful people who are not apt to base their freindships upon religious preferences. and what a wonderful place for adventure and hiking outdoors. good luck in your endeavors

Default Here it is

If you want liberal, wild etc. There is only one place to go. Vermont. They elected a Socialist Senator and the state probably has the greatest percentage of tree-huggers per capita in the country.

Oh, there are a few who look like Hippies, but the movement is quite dead. There is, however, a residual religion based on the old movement called Learyism. The religion was formed by Timothy Leary's older brother, Really Leary. It teaches that when one dies, his or her sole goes to a long term parking garage in downtown Chicago.
