Florida to Utah
My employer just obtained a company in Utah for our company. My company has asked me if I'm interested in moving to from St. Petersburg (Tampa Bay area), Florida to Salt Lake City, Utah to manage it.
I orginally moved to Florida from Michigan to get away from winter but then I got introduced to Florida summers. Ouch. That being said, I love the sun of Florida. I mean I love just coming out and seeing how bright everything is, something Michigan never offered because it was always gray skies.
I'm 36 with no children and no wife so I have nobody else to answer to and my company is offering me a large pay increase so part of me thinks it would be stupid to turn this down. The other part of me thinks I don't want to wind up in Salt Lake City, Utah. Nothing against the city or the people, but I would have never even visited SLC in my life had this not come up. I knew it existed, it just never did anything for me, if that makes sense.
When it comes to weather, I don't care about the snow, but I would like to know if once it stops snowing does the snow come out, or is winter 6 months of gray? Have any of you come from Florida or just the south in general and what are your impression of SLC? Any other info you might think of would be helpful. Thank you.

Many people are amazed when they relocated to Utah to see how bright the sun actually is. We have lots of sunshine, even in the winter.
Can you take a trip out here to check it out before you decide? That would probably be your best bet instead of taking other people's word. Utah is like escargot...some people love it and others wouldn't venture near it with a ten foot pole.

I don't think I'll get a chance to come visit first. I wish I could, that would make this decision somewhat easier. This all happened pretty sudden. In fact the change happened on Thursday, and they asked me and I said I'll think about. Then I was asked again on Friday and when I said, that wasn't very much time I was told this probably happen with in 4 weeks, so this has just side swiped me. I don't want to pass on an opportunity, and I really have no reason to stay in Florida, but at the same time this has felt more like home then all my previous years did in Michigan.

I just moved from tampa, fl to slc. I cant tell you how happy I am to have made the move. If your into out door activities at all, this is FOR SURE the place for you. All around its great. People on here make it seem like the mormons are everywhere blah blah, dont even take that into consideration, seriously. People are EXTREMELY nice, easy going, MUCH less traffic, much nicer of a city overall. Not so many ghetto parts.. There ghettos here are just houses that havent been taken care of. Me and my wife were just walking around downtown a few weeks ago on friday night.. would you do that in tampa?

Take a chance. Find a rental property and try it. Being single you might need to work a little harder to make friends as most people 36 years old are married with children. I'm over 40, no kids, no husband and I'm perfectly fine with my life the way it is. Don't have a desire to be married and I've never wanted kids. I spend a lot of time with my family, my friends, my dog and working on projects around my house. You'll probably get to know people through work and perhaps through some of your hobbies.
As far as a comparison to Florida, I've only ever been to Tampa and Orlando....and both were business trips. I am not a fan of humidity so Utah is my kind of climate. The SL valley has mountains to the east (Wasatch) and moutains to the west (Oquirrh). Oquirrh is pronounced O-kur. While in Florida, on an overcast day, I had no way of finding a sense of direction. Here we have the mountains and I didn't realize how much I'd miss them until I was out of state. I will say that mid January through mid February is when I tend to be in a slump as far as my mood goes. I think the winter blahs set-in.
Good luck to you.

yeah the mountains and grid system for roads make utah probably the easiest place I have ever seen to navigate. I work for dish network and it makes aiming the dishes easy as can be, just look for the mountains... sucks when its foggy and you cant see them, then I need the compus haha

I'll start by talking about the weather. Its certainly not sunny all the time like Florida is. However, we have four distinct seasons. There is a period from about May 1st through September 30th where we usually have nice sunny weather. The rest of the time the weather is cool. We get quite a bit of snow in the winter. We don't get alot of rain. Utah is considered a desert compared to many places. Although, it doesn't look like a desert at all until you get out in the Great Basin.
Whether you will like it here or not depends on a variety of factors. I'll list a few:
1. Do you like the outdoors?
2. Do you think you'd enjoy hiking in the mountains in the summer?
3. Do you think you'd enjoy skiing in the snow in the winter?
4. Can you get by without much nightlife (partying and drinking)?
5. Do you know anyone out here?
6. How much do you value things like a physically clean community?
7. How important is something like a low crime rate to you?
8. Is limited traffic congestion very important to you?
I think you get idea. Single people who come here expecting a big night life are apt to be disappointed. I'm not saying you cannot find one. However, it is going to be quite limited compared to most major cities. On the other hand, if you like the outdoors you may think this place is great.
The Salt Lake/Ogden/Provo area routinely makes it on the list of the 50 best metro areas in the country to live. I hope all that helps.

Muta,
I was just wondering what type of work you do?
Reason I am asking is that I work in Tampa for an IT Consulting company and I would love to be able to move to UT.
I am hoping that the company I currently work for will be expanding out west and will be offered to go. I have already mentioned this to my boss and a few others, but we are waiting to build a client base out west before anyone would be able to transfer.
PM me if you prefer to keep this off of CD.
Thank you,
LAFrench
