I have lived in Moab for fifteen years. It is the most beautiful place I have lived in. It is also the most miserable, degrading, and difficult-to-survive-in place I have ever lived in. People from elsewhere always ask about the Mormons. I don't know any. They keep to themselves. They have nice houses, jobs, vehicles. Gentiles generally don't, unless they brought this all with them when they came. This is probably because God hates us and is punishing us. Or it is discrimination. I really don't know. I don’t think the Mormons do either, so I can’t accuse them of anything bad. I am not really sure what, if anything, makes up their cultural ethos. I bear them no ill will. I feel the same way about ants, as well. I thank God for my health, and that I have managed to not have any children to ruin my life. I also thank Him for giving me the mental capacity to reject the conservative politics and culture of greed that permeate this area. I have many friends, who love me and take care of me, and am well-liked and generally respected. This does not pay the bills, however, which is my only real complaint about life here. I am horribly sorry, though, that I bought property. It has steadily declined in value, and now I am stuck here. If Hell is my punishment, I am ready.

I am sure I will receive much hatred from this post, but it is meant objectively, without malice, and as a warning to prevent others from making the mistake of moving to Utah. If you come please bring money, lots of it. Please do not construe any of my comments as being against any religion. I love the sinner, hate the sin. The sin I hate most is greed, with hubris and abuse of power next on the list. Christian missionaries saved my life once, so I have a special place in my heart for people of faith.

Many of us are quite forceful about saying this state has low wages, and few jobs that pay a living wage. I'm sorry you got caught in this predicament. I knew fully well what the situation was here before returning. My husband is VP for a major corporation that told him he could live anywhere so long as he had high speed internet and a good phone line. It took us three weeks to get out of the San Francisco bay area after being told this. Yes Utah has it's quirks. It is not for everyone. It is definately not like other states nor will it ever be no matter how many transplants want o try and force it to be the same place they too wanted to leave. Paradise is not always paradise to everyone. I agree about the greed factor. It was not always this way. Seems the real estate boom fostered a massive growth spurt that also engenedered greed disproportionately. The funny thing is it is not just the local business people, but those who have moved here who own business that do the same thing. It knows no ethnic, relgious, political or state background when it comes to those wanting to cash in and not share. This is something a person should be informed of. Especially if you come here on a job offer and have no signed contract with it all spelled out in detail. Do your homework. find out what jobs are available for real, not possible future jobs. Make sure those jobs are salaried, not commission. Again I can't say it enough, get a contract before you move here. If you don't have to rely on a job as in you are retired, this is moot.

This is a wounded angel. I question where is your love and compassion? Listening inspires others...like when GOD listens to you.

Remember this: If we're not generous when it's difficult, we won't be generous when it's easy.

Default What Does The Word "rational" Mean?

My wife and I left an area that Luther Burbank called “the chosen spot of all this earth as far as Nature is concerned,” and decided to live on a spot of ground in Utah that is arid to say the least. To many, the choice seems illogical at best, yet for us it was the beginning of a dream. No, my wife and I did not choose Utah because of economic or employment reasons. I will be retired in just over a month, and we can well afford to stay where we are. No, our children do not live in Utah. In fact, we only know two people in the entire state and they do not live near where we are locating.

As I have stated in another post. There is an abundance of cheaper and much more beautiful states in which to live. On face value, there seems to be no logical reason to move to Utah. So, excluding job transfers, why are you contemplating, actually moving, or have moved to Utah.
THE TITLE OF THIS POST IS A RHETORICAL QUESTION, BECAUSE NOBODY CAN ACTUALLY ANSWER IT. "RATIONAL" TO YOU IS NOT NECESSARILY "RATIONAL" TO SOMEBODY ELSE, GIVEN THE WIDE VARIANCE IN BACKGROUND, BIAS, SITUATIONAL AWARENESS, ETC.

I PERSONALLY MAKE NO DISTINCTION BETWEEN MY WORK AND PLAY. I HARDLY KNOW WHICH IS WHICH. I PURSUE MY OWN VISION THROUGH WHATEVER I DO AND I LEAVE OTHERS TO DETERMINE WHETHER I AM WORKING OR PLAYING. INDEED, WORK IS LOVE MADE VISIBLE.

AS TO HOW I ENDED UP HERE IN UTAH, GOD ONLY KNOWS. I ONLY RECALL THAT I SAW IT'S BEAUTY AND IT'S SOUL....MY EYES SAW A MAGNIFICENT FINGERPAINT...A WELL KNOWN ARTIST BY THE NAME OF "GOD"!

I LIVE DAILY WITH THE INSPIRATION THAT UTAH FEEDS MY SPIRIT WITH IT'S BEAUTIFUL COLORFUL SUNRISE AND IT'S SUNSETS, SOMETIMES WE TAKE FOR GRANTED. THEN I WILL LEAVE BEHIND SET OF FOOTPRINTS INTO WET RED DIRT, AND WALK TO THE NEXT BEAUTIFUL PLACE WHERE MY HEART LEADS ME NEXT.

I didn't think Ace was whining...sounded pretty rational to me...trying to make the best out of a situation they did not expect to be in...hang in there!

We moved here mainly, and I know this sounds awful, due to the fact that we could use our equity for a nice home and not have a major mortgage and pay CA taxes since our early retirement. My parents moved here with us, they from Palm Springs, we from Newcastle, Ca east of Sac, although we are life long southern californians. Anyway we wanted to be somewhere close to CA so we could still try to maintain our lifelong friends, be close to our sons and my parents grandsons, who are in P.S. and Oceanside.

If we could have done anything differently it would be
1) Not retire early (but did due to health reasons)
2) rent first
3) keep my folks in palm springs

We have never lived anywhere like this...we have neighbors who shun us, but also a couple of neighbors who are very nice. We are used to the more high energy lifestyle so we are having a hard time adjusting. But we do like fry sauce! Try Marv's over on Bluff and Sunset in St. George. Anyway, our home is for sale and we are going back.

I miss the trees and deer and family and friends...but I will also miss the red rocks and beautiful vistas here.

That's it in a nutshell...

What gives you or anyone in Utah the right to question why, other than job transfers, someone would move here. The last time I checked I live in the State of Utah, not the STATE OF MORMON. It was the very founders of the LDS church that established and faught for freedom or religion here in Utah and the right not to be harassed based on your religion.
I was wondering why you care if transplants would like to know which areas are more likely to be diverse? If we still live in a free Country and the Zion curtain hasn't materialized just yet then what does it matter if non- LDS people want to live here, for whatever their reasons might be?
Wouldn't it seem more logical to be welcoming of all types of people ?Maybe to give some other message than, if your not moving for your job- stay away. I am not sure if you are aware how these types of posts come across but Christian isn't one of the words that pops right into mind.
Anyway for those of you who want to live here because you love the changes of seasons, or you ski or snow board, or you love to hike, or you need some place safer than you live, or you just plain like it here... as far as I am concerned you are welcome. Please keep it clean, have fun, be safe and add to our every growing diversity.

The Bill of Rights? Nope, actually, the Bill of Rights only guarantees rights already possessed. I don’t know; you’ve got me.
