I was wondering why you care if transplants would like to know which areas are more likely to be diverse? If we still live in a free Country and the Zion curtain hasn't materialized just yet then what does it matter if non- LDS people want to live here, for whatever their reasons might be?
Wouldn't it seem more logical to be welcoming of all types of people ?Maybe to give some other message than, if your not moving for your job- stay away. I am not sure if you are aware how these types of posts come across but Christian isn't one of the words that pops right into mind.
Anyway for those of you who want to live here because you love the changes of seasons, or you ski or snow board, or you love to hike, or you need some place safer than you live, or you just plain like it here... as far as I am concerned you are welcome. Please keep it clean, have fun, be safe and add to our every growing diversity.

Yikes, that's a pretty negative vibe you got from an innocuous question

About The Original Question
Back to the original question...
Having examined my reasons for relocating to Utah (a relo that's still in process and moving very slowly), I have to say that my wife and I don't have rational reasons. Don't have many friends in Utah, not big on the winter sports, nor are the economic opportunities better.
I do believe we'll have a higher quality of life than in Southern Cal, and we've personally found the people in Utah are a bit friendlier. But those are really expectations, not rational reasons for moving.
Lived in Utah 20-plus years ago and have returned on visits quite frequently. Every time we leave, it's with some misgivings...we'd really rather stay. And once we return to Southern Cal, we immediately start planning our next trip to Utah.
I guess it comes down to two things for us, neither of which are very rational: 1) We miss the landscape, people and lifestyle of Utah when we're not there, and 2) We tend to find our best selves while we're in Utah. Nothing very rational here at all, I'm afraid...but we're still doin' it!

Good enough reasons...seems like Utah is where your heart is..if thats the case then you should go for it! It's a stunning state, and it doesn't work for everyone, but it sounds like home to you! Good Luck! Where is your favorite place in Utah??

I can relate well to your "comfortable-ness" with Utah. For over 30 years, I tried to get away from that place! Spent the last dozen years mostly over the border in WY but for 100 miles around, one can still say they live "in Salt Lake".
Here's how I finally got away from it:
Replace those mountains with something else majestic .... let's say ... and Ocean, for example.
Drop by those three Health-Food stores one more time and then, go to Denver or Portland or Seattle or ... just about anywhere to find a better one or several.
Drop by a "Goodwill Store" while you're out in America - can make one lose their taste for a "D.I."
Score a job in the real world with real pay and benefits ... that pretty much wiped Utah outta my mind right there.
Find somewhere to live slightly near a religious cult/sect/branch - something easy like, Baptists or Seventh Day Adventists or Scientologists or Jehovah Witnesses - it replaces that "they're all Mormon" feeling one sometimes gets in Utah. (The others won't feed you half as well).
Go for a night out in a real town! My Good Golly, if you're someplace besides Utah, you might actually find something entertaining to do.
Go ahead - where ever you are, America - make yourself a pan of Green Jello! For an added treat, make yourself some red!
There are a variety of "tricks" to help you leave Utah behind, should you so desire - just depends on your life-style as to which bag of tricks to open.
But if you simply must live in utah - three words: KRCL FM - 90.9 - Salt Lake City - broadcasting from behind the Zion Curtain. Also available at [url=http://www.krcl.org]/url] (Community Radio).
Best of luck. I have to go back thru Utah in the Spring heading East. I always worry that it'll reach out and grab me! Half of those towns around there only got populated by people whose cars broke down there - and before that, their wagons - and before that, their handcarts!

I'm moving to Utah for many reasons.
1) Natural beauty. avid hiker,cyclist
2) Anasazi ruins. I study ancient America
3) The general moral fiber that LDS embraces(I'm not a Mormon)
4) Isolation in the wilderness and the Mormon propencity to leave outsiders alone means I will be left alone
5) Ability to carry a gun and protect myself and my family
6) Some degree of patriotism and love of country ( Irealize LDS has issues w/ gov)
7) The general work ethic and family values pervasive in the state
8) support of pvt land ownership and states rights and some other stuff too.

jmchzn, you won't find much anasazi, but a whole lot of Fremont. Try Linda Cordell's book, "Prehistory of the SW" It's published by the U of NM press.

Favorite Places
Dogmom, I'm pretty partial to the Cache Valley these days. SLC and Utah Valley, while nice, have both gotten a little big for me...Logan actually reminds me of what Provo was like 20-plus years ago.
Having left Utah for Southern Cal years ago, I'm haunted by something a friend said when I first announced the move: "I wouldn't trade a cup of Utah dirt for all of Southern California." While his opinion may be a little over the top (Southern Cal does have its benefits), my wife and I have concluded that Utah works better for us at this time in our lives. We'll keep working on the relo and get there as soon as the stars line up right (or whatever other type of omen is needed to get things moving along).
