Salute to John Huntsman
I must admit as a longtime Utahn, I was very proud to hear that John Huntsman was selected to be our next ambassador to China. John has been a good governor who has been anything, but an idealogue. He always kind of captivated me whether it was playing with his rock and roll band in the basement of the Governor's Mansion on South Temple or taking time to have lunch with construction workers. His willingness to accept civil unions for gay people made him stand apart from the loonies in his political party. I always felt he was wanted to do more about the environment and issues like air quality, but was hamstrung by conservatives around him and budget considerations.
The position of ambassador to China has become much more important than most of us realize. The day may come when China's GNP is larger than that of the USA. Huntsman not only speaks Chinese, but adopted a Chinese daughter. He was Ambassador to Singapore in his past as well.
I'm sorry to see him leave as Governor, but in his new position, the whole country will benefit from his talents.

I agree, I think Jon was a very good candidate for the position, the best. Hopefully Herbert won't flush Huntsman's progress down the toilet.

I'm very disappointed to see yet another Utah governor leave for a presidential appointment, but Jon will serve his post well. Jon's been very, very good for this state. Unfortunately, with Gary "Utah County-Republican" Herbert, I think Utah will be going backward. Hopefully Jim Matheson runs in 2010, but with the unappealing label of "Democrat" (at least unappealing here), I don't think he has much of a chance.

Sadly, I agree with you. I think its been six years or so since any democrat has been elected to a statewide office in Utah.
