Smile Relocating to Layton

Can you give me some information about Layton, I have been online looking to see what the area looks like (Beautiful) my questions are how high do the power bills get? and with that how much snow do you get and just how cold does it get? I have lived in the south, CA & NV and now my new adventure is bringing me to Utah, I will be looking for a quite place to live and a good job I will be looking for clerical work & my husband heavy equipment work. Can any one tell me if we are on the right track to move to Utah for work and a pleasant place to live.

Layton is a fantastic place to live.

We lived there for about 3 years...between Hill AFB and the mall...east of I-15.

Of course these will vary upon your use...but we had a 2200 sq ft tri-level house with 4 br and 2 baths.

Utility bills:...we had gas heat which was never more than $80 a month in winter...and negligible in summer.

Electric...pretty low in winter...$30 or $40. It would jump to $100 or so in the summer with central AC. But to be honest...we also had a swamp cooler that did wonders except for the very hottest months.

You'll also bay a Layton City bill for garbage and water...which averaged $80 every 2 months. It was sometimes $110-120 in summer with the sprinklers and swamp coler using more water.

***Keep in mind I moved over a year ago to NY...so if any of these rates seem old, someone please correct me***

Summers are hot and dry. It can reach 100 any day from early July through early Sept. It might not rain for 2-3 months. Spring and fall are exceptional. Winters do get cold and it can get below zero. Snowfall averages about 55-60 inches per year in that part of the valley (and is a little higher than downtown SLC because of slightly higher elevation). If you end up on the far east side...you'll get more snow).

The only real problem in winter is dense fog caused by trapped air and pollution. It can last from a day or two to a few weeks on the extreme end. I have seen it where SLC is socked in and Layton is just above the smog layer however.

Traffic is busy right in town...and its congested right at the exits for I-15 between Layton and Clearfield. there are two main shopping areas...one on each side of the highway.

One other note...if you end up just south of Hill AFB...the jets are LOUD. Just an FYI...but it's the roar of freedom!

What I cannot speak to is the job outlook...because I have been gone for awhile.

Good luck!!!

I wish I could give you specifics, but I do not live there.
I do have a brother that lives in Layton and he and his family love it there. His oldest (20 now) is in college and thinking of going out of state.
The outdoor activities alone could keep someone pretty busy, not to mention if you have younger boys who enjoy them too.
The bills would be what alexi stated and may be a little higher since she has moved.
I wish you luck with your thought of moving to UT. I on the other hand, am still working on convincing my wife that it is a great place to live and raise a family.

I grew up in Layton (18 years) and loved it but I tried to move back when I got older (21yrs) and couldn't do it only because I wanted away from all the High School drama I left behind since I was "grown" now haha

Layton is a nice place to raise kids. It gets a ton of snow!!!

For me though I want out of UT I'm done with the closed minded drama of the UT living.

Yeah, it must be hard being so superior to everybody. Good luck on a speedy exit. I'm sure you'll be much happier when you find a place where everybody is as "open-minded" as you clearly are.

I want to thank every one for the responses, I believe that we are making the right choice moving to Utah we are getting very excited about the move, I haven't heard anything bad in regards to Layton area, except maybe alot of snow but I think that would be a much wanted change.

You will love Layton. I lived there for 16 years and before that Clearfield for 11. I would of lived there forever, but married someone from another state. I worked for the city there, so I know the areas well. I lived east by the mountains off Hwy 89 and cherry Lane...and it is so beautiful. The moutains and canyon views from there are amazing. I also lived off Hillfield Rd and Fort Lane. That area is close to everything, the mall, restaurant row and HAFB, however you heard the planes flying over alot, pretty much all day long. So I preferred the east part of Layton. West Layton would be ok too but not as pretty as the east.
As mentioned, it does snow alot.....especially close to the mountains. I would leave for work in the morning with snowpacked roads in the middle of a blizzard and drive down to the city offices to work off Fort Lane rd and it would hardly be snowing. The power bills aren't too bad, depends on how big of a home, apt, you have.
Good luck on your move!
