California Girl Moving to Orem, Utah?
My husband was laid off a few months ago and we just can't afford to live in Southern CA anymore. So we have decided to move to Utah. Our daughter goes to BYU right now and our son, who will be a senior next year, is hoping to go there too. I have lived in South. Calif. my entire life, so I’m sure it’s normal to feel some trepidation. We are thinking about purchasing a townhome in Orem off 1600 N and I was hoping someone might be able to give some insight as to the area. My son will be in the Timpanogos High boundaries, but he has done some research and would rather go to Timpview High in Provo. Any advice? I hope this isn’t too presumptuous of me, but my husband is still looking for employment and I thought maybe someone out there could help. His expertise is in the telecommunications industry. If anyone knows someone in that line of business maybe we could send his resume to them.
Any information and help would be very much appreciated.

North Orem is a nice area to live. You kind of can't go wrong there.
I don't know why your son would want to go to Timpview. Not that it's a bad school, but it also doesn't strike me as all that great. I think of Mountain View (in west Orem) as the school with the best reputation in the area. Perhaps my understanding of it is a bit dated.
I can say that Timpview is in a really good neighborhood and that most of the kids there are pretty good kids. Better than, say, Fontana High School (in Fontana, CA). Of course, our worst high schools here are light-years ahead of Fontana High School.
But when I was in the market for high schools (which was about fifteen years ago), Mountain View always seemed to have the best academic and extracurricular programs by far of all the school in Provo or Orem.
Perhaps I'll have to ask my wife's cousins. They're recent Timpview grads, so they might know more about it. I'll be seeing them in two weeks.
As far as your husband's work goes, has he considered applying at BYU? I don't know what he does exactly, but BYU has staff in just about every field. If they have openings that he is qualified for, then it could be a really nice thing. Benefits at BYU are pretty good and the pay, though not as good as in a more businessy setting, is comfortable. And your kids would get half-tuition breaks (if they're still your dependants). They'd love that! Plus he could see them every day — maybe even eat lunch together in the CougarEat (I know a lot of parent/child pairs like that who do that regularly here). He'd love that!
Beyond that, I can't help you much. As a student myself, my best job connections in telecommunications are in telemarketing!
And I don't think there's any need to feel too much trepidation about Provo-Orem. It's nice here. The winters are really cold compared to southern California (okay, unless you're someplace like Big Bear). But other than that, it's not that big a difference. It seems like half the people who live here these days are people in your very situation — it's getting more and more California-ized all the time. Shoot, I'm a part of that myself, I suppose.

There are a LOT of transplanted Californians around here. For the most part they seem to like it. Two big reasons I've heard from them for moving: better cost of living and less societal ills (gangs, uber-liberal CA politics, etc). Orem's not perfect, but I lived there for about eight years, and I really liked it. We only left because we needed a bigger house and couldn't find what we wanted there. We actually lived really close to 1600 N, and that's generally a good part of Orem. Depends how far west you are (by Geneva it gets dicey) or how far east (by the old WordPerfect campus it's very, very nice).
Timpanogos and Timpview are both excellent schools. Those are the two I'd choose in the Provo/Orem area. However, they are in different districts, so if you moved to Orem but your son wanted to attend Timpview, I don't think there's any way they'd let him do that. They often allow movement within the same district, but not interdistrict. And it could be quite expensive to move into the Timpview boundaries because it's mostly the northeast bench area, which is very nice, my favorite part of Provo, but comparitively more than the rest of the city. Timpanogos boundaries also include the high-rent northeast area of Orem, but they extend to more affordable housing, too.
Sorry I don't know much about the telecommunications industry. There are companies like Qwest and Comcast that you could try. You might consider looking at headhunter firms, who often have the inside line on jobs in certain industries. One good piece of news is that the unemployment rate here is very low right now, so chances are good that some company would be glad to get your husband's skills. Also, the BYU idea is a very good one, if they have any jobs that you're interested in. The tuition break is very nice. You can look up jobs online at their website, I think.

Yeah what they said..Orem is North LA without all the minorities. I'm sorry that you sent your kids to BYU. Hopefully they won't be as narrow minded as my neighbors. Go Utes!

I would recommend he applies to Convergys, a global telecommunications company. I worked there for 10 years and it's a great company. There is an office in Orem. They can be found at www.convergys.com. Good luck!

I worked at Matrix Marketing (now Convergys) in high school. It was a great high school job, but there were tons of lazy kids and middle aged burn outs. It paid pretty well though for what we did...answer calls for Solid Gold 70's and The Monkey's Greatest Hits! I also think having the facility in the Roy area is what made it so ghetto.
Chazzer I actually had a scholie to BYU, but I enjoy my free agency too much lol.
