Army Family Moving To Price...HELP
Well Uncle Sam has decided to completely ignore my requests to go back to the East Coast and is sending us to Price, UT in late July. We're currently in Reno, NV and I hate it here, so I'm looking for some perspectives on what I can expect in Price. I'm 31, hubby is 31 and we have 2 daughters, ages 9 and 6. We are non-mormon, non LDS, but we are both Catholic and we raise our kids Catholic but we don't go to church other than special occasions. I have a pierced eyebrow, pierced ears and bright red hair (well, by the time we move it will likely be dark red/brown), but other than that, we're pretty cookie cutter. We do like to drink, have get together BBQ parties, but we aren't crazy troublemakers either. It's important to me that my kids fit in, they are military brats and already struggle a little bit because of that and I don't want to add any other religious aspects on top, KWIM?
We don't have a choice, we're coming..so I guess what I am asking is what can I expect? Can I make friends there even though I am non-LDS? Will my kids encounter any issues? Any malls around? LOL.
HELP!!!! Seriously, I've been depressed 3 years here in Reno and I just want to make sure we're no jumping from the frying pan into the fryer even though we have no choice.
TYIA for any help!

Army—Price—what does the Army have in Price? Oh, I bet someone is a Recruiter.
Price is very diverse. The primary industry around Price is mining, which attracts people from all over. I’m afraid you are not going to find a lot of excitement, though. It’s quiet and out of the way, which is why my wife and I are building there. Provo and SLC are a couple of hours north, but the trip in winter can be—challenging—yeah, that’s the word—challenging.
By my last count, there are more LDS churches in Price than any other, but Price still has a significant representation of other religions, including the Catholic religion. Price also has a core population of Greeks and I think there is a Greek Orthodox church in Price.
If you are coming from Reno, then you already have the proper attire for winter. Winter is cold in Price but not much snow. Summers are hot and occasionally the wind picks up.
You and your kids will be fine. Price isn’t a metropolis by any stretch of the imagination, but I can think of a lot of other places that are much worse.
Pierced eyebrow and ears, hmm, I once had both my legs pierced by a fellow named Charlie, who had his shop just outside Pleiku, Vietnam. The whole experience turned my hair grey, but it never went back to its natural brown.

Thank you for the reply Sergeant! Yes, my Husband is an Army Recruiter..lucky us I have another question, I've been searching extensively for houses for rent in the Price area and I have not found a single HOUSE for rent. Plenty of apartments, but with 2 kids and 2 cats, we pretty much need a single family house. Are there any for rent? If not, are there any towns nearby that are decent neighborhoods w/ houses for rent??

Here's the URL for the Sun Advocate, which is a local paper. Go to the classifieds. There are 122 houses for rent around the area. My wife and I are renting while our house is under construction.

IF I were you, I'd check out Emery county too. It's a great place to live and the commute isn't that bad. Also, the cost of living is extremely reasonable. And, your children should fit right in!

I grew up in Price and my parents still live there. I am LDS, but most of my friends were not. There is a pretty open population there and very diverse. I lived in all the surrounding areas except Wellington, because I didn't like the commute, which if funny because I lived in Helper too. Helper is less of a LDS community in fact they are mostly Catholic. I loved it as far as asafe place, but for a teen it is a bit boring. The closest mall is Provo or Grand Junction. I desire somedays to move back, but for now I just visit often. I loved my neighbors. I had one lady who was from Crete and she was about 80 and still spoke little english although she moved her at the age of 16. As mentioned before, the main population is of Greek decent. This is the only area NOT settled by the LDS people. Just an FYI.

I have to agree with the last poster. Helper is more of a Catholic community than Price, it was settled by Italian immigrants. Funny thing, I found your post while searching for homes for rent in this area. I grew up here, moved to Vegas in 2000, got married, hubby enlisted in the NV Guard (based out of Reno actually, the 593rd), had baby, hubby got orders for active duty, left last July, I moved to Price to have help from family with the baby, hubby coming home in Sept and doesn't know a soul in this area. We are Catholics also, actually got married at the church here in Price. When are you moving out here? Have you found a place yet? Send me an email, maybe we can get together for a bbq & a beer!
