Question Info about Ft. Duschesne ?

I'm a new graduate and am looking at jobs on the Uintah & Ouray Indian Reservation, specifically at the Fort Duchesne Health Center in Ft. Duschesne. Can anybody tell me about the outdoor recreational opportunities there? Temperature, mountains or desert, rivers or lakes, or areas/towns close by that might have recreation if Ft. Duschesne doesn't? Any information or other informational websites about that area would be appreciated. I used to live in Salt Lake City many years ago, and worked at a couple of the ski resorts, so I'm familiar with the outdoor rec ops around the SLC area. Thank you.

I was looking in the same area. A great place to check weather is yahoo weather, enter the town and state and on the right is averages and records. it tells you the year round weather. I live in Texas also.

Hi
hey this is my first post! thought it might be fun to talk straight up about UT, since I've been here 33 yrs.

Ft. Duchesne is the tribal headquarters for the Ute Indians. Government, police, etc. Quite frankly, it is very depressing to drive through there. I go out that way every fall. They didn't give the Indian the best land in the country, either. To the south is high desert, the east is desolate, west is some farming, north is the High Uintas mountain range.

I would highly recommend that you take a scouting trip to see if it's what you're looking for. The biggest town would be Vernal, then Roosevelt.

I disagree. I worked on the south edge of the Uintah reservation. The only thing stopping the Utes from using the land to it's fullest is themselves.

for the most part you'll be safe, I have found the Utes to be one of the most respectable tribes in the nation. But drugs and alcohol is still predominant, in comparison to a anglo community of equal size. Because of the drugs and alcohol you will find that mental illness in general is prolific as well.

Just be very careful when you drive into the remote areas of the reservation until they get to know you. It's not uncommon to get rocks thrown at tourists/others. Build a good reputation, because word of mouth is the biggest communication source up there.
