Queso con chile is like many other foods and they vary in taste and ingredients in various parts of the US and foreign countries. It's whatever satisfies your taste buds.

Here's some sites that use white cheese.

Default Good Tex-Mex in SLC? Nope...

I moved here from Austin about 2 years ago as well. While I love SLC (my hometown), I have to admit the food scene here is pretty spare. Lots and I mean LOTS of franchises, with a few hidden local gems here and there, but you really have to hunt for them. NOTHING like Austin at all, which is a GREAT food city. (Threadgillls, Curras, Iron Cactus, Casa Garcias, Baby A's, The Salt Lick, County Line, mmmmmm......)

Although to SLC's credit, there are a lot of good Indian restaurants that didn't use to be here 15 years ago when I left. So, you may want to ditch the quest for good Tex-mex and hit the Indian spots in town.

I'm always hesitant on taking people's recommendations for Mexican and Tex-mex food as it's pretty subjective and I usually wind up being disappointed when the waiter brings me a plate thats smothered in some sort of enchildad sauce (canned) and covered in about 3lbs of melted cheese...I've actually stopped looking for good Mexican and Tex-mex food as I'm always bummed out when I leave.

If anyone knows where to get a good chile relleno, I'm all ears...I haven't found a good one yet here in Utah. They are always soggy, bland, stuffed with cheddar cheese and topped with canned enchilada sauce...ugh!

The Red Iguana is my top pick! It's on N. temple just west of I-15 andit's always packed. Probably 1/2 of the customers are Hispanic. It doesn't like like much from the outside but the food and service are very good.

I feel the same way about Tex-Mex as well as BBQ, because I'm usually disappointed with what I find unless it's in Texas or Oklahoma. We have gotten pretty lucky. My boyfriend has several hispanic employees and they send him home with food. One of his cooks sent him home with about a 1/2 dozen Tamales, and he said they were the best he's ever had. I haven't had any experiences with chile rellenos here, but I've found that there are individuals around here that sell Tamales. They are usually running around the parking lots of Walmart or Smiths. My boyfriend actually bought some of those before he got the others and they were very very good. A little sketchy to buy food from a parking lot (that's what I said anyway!), but we had a good experience......lol. If you're ever up toward Ogden, there seems to be a lot of local mexican restaurants that are packed with local Hispanics, so if they're eating it, it must be fairly authentic....

You just had to mention The Salt Lick ... now I'm drooling down my shirt, and the Chicken Fried Steak at Threadgills ... Guess I'm going to have to plan a trip back home to visit, again. My mother is getting suspicious about my motives for coming home to the Hill Country <g>.

I'm assuming the "Aggie" is from A&M...and if that's the case, coming from a Long Horn...this is difficult, but you have good taste!

I had a co-worker here who used to have ribs from The County Line in Austin fed-exed to him here.

If anyone knows of a good bbq joint, I'm all ears (and teeth!). I've been to Goodwoods in Draper a few times, and while it's ok, it's too clean and fancy for a real bbq place...no butcher paper on the tables, no dried sauce on the tables and floor...and the ventilation system is so good, you can't smell the smoke! They've gentrified and sanitized bbq! That should be a criminal offense!!!!

I really enjoyed Soul and Bones, but it's in Ogden, so you'd have to be up this way to enjoy it. It has a louisiana flair to it, as the owner is from there, but I thought it was really good. I usually don't listen to a lot of reccommendations from people when it comes to BBQ, but I was told about the place from a co-worker who is from the south and has spent time in both Texas and Oklahoma. I'm glad I listened to her because it was pretty good

As a 20-year San Antonio resident now living in Utah, I can tell you won't find much in the way of real Tex-Mex. I did find one place in Ogden that is 'pretty close' - Ventanas. Even that ain't the real deal, but it's the closest I have found.

Do you remember where it's located in Ogden? I'd like to go check it out
