Default My Bishop spoke out against discrimination of non-LDS.

Just thought I'd share some things my Bishop said yesterday at the end of sacrament meeting about this subject. His neighbors are non-LDS and are considering moving to CA because of how they're treated in Orem, Utah. He mentioned that parents wouldn't let the kids play at their house since they weren't LDS. He then went on to say that prejudice in ANY form is not fitting for members of the church of Jesus Christ, and that those non-LDS people are beloved children of our Heavenly Father also. I wanted to share this because this sort of thing is such a problem that the Utah forum is full of people wondering if it will happen to them if they move to Utah. For reference, my ward is made up of people who live between Cascade Golf Course and the intersection of 800 North and University Ave.

Cheers to him, although he's gonna get excommunicated for saying it.

Not at all. I think many church leaders are concerned about the way that non-members are treated. I think they would like to do something about it.

I think Utah County is a particularly difficult place for non-LDS people to live. The population is very heavily LDS and I suspect out of those people you have a very high rate of weekly church attendance and such.

I blame the church in one sense for this situation: Members are so busy with all the many meetings and responsibilities involved in belonging to the church that they have little time to befriend non-members. I suspect its also a little awkward for many of them who are used to talking about things like "who is going on a mission", "who just got called to be President of the Young Women's Association", and "the shower for the new baby in the ward" to break out of their culture and engage non-members who moved into their neighborhood from out-of-state.

I appreciate this Bishop's efforts. I think, though, that the family probably would be better served by moving out of Utah County and into an area either in Utah, or outside of it that is more diverse. Its just a reality.

Good for that bishop, I don't understand why this hasn't been emphasized more. For some members of the church to send their 19 yo's to all parts of the world to share a message with strangers, and then treat their non-LDS neighbors like crap just doesn't add up.

Utah County is not the place for you if you're non-LDS IMO.

Thankfully according to the scripture I read, I'm not headed to that place below for not being a church member It is fine for that Bishop to speak on behalf of good relations between members and non members. I was in a neighborhood (E. Millcreek) before we moved, where the church members treated us very nicely indeed. It probably does vary widely, and no doubt in Utah Co. it is tougher.

Doesn't surprise me, it's certainly not a new concept in my ward (though it's rarely the bishop that teaches such, as church leaders aren't the ones who usually give sermons).

It's kind of funny that when people run across someone they don't like, they blame the group they are affiliated with, rather than the individual. Just because people may belong to various organizations, it doesn't mean they don't act as individuals. Neither I, my church leaders, nor other church members have control over members of our congregation. To imply that we dictate how they act is ridiculous.

so true that you can't control the individual members of a congregation or religion for that matter. Look at Islam for a good example. I think that because the LDS religion is so prevalent in Utah culture that it just adds another difficult layer to the situation. I know plenty of christians of other faiths besides LDS who go to church on Sunday, but don't live out what they are being taught. However, in another place, you wouldn't really hold the denomination responsible for an individuals behavior, you would just chalk it up to the individual being a bad seed, or without manners.

Folks, let's keep it on a civil level - no bashing of any one religion. Several posts have been deleted, that you can't see, for hostile language.

I still have not seen any of the negatives people talk about. Our LDS neighbor keeps saying he hopes we never move because our kids play so well. We spent Thanksgiving with a family and not once were we preached to or made to feel uncomfortable.

If you take a sample of people with an commonality, you will find some jerks in the bunch. I just don't get why people focus on this one commonality so much.
