Moved to Grantsville about six months ago from Cottonwood Heights, and a year ago from Northern California in the San Francisco Bay Area. I just wanted to ask...what's with the eateries here in Tooele County? It's awful, terrible food as though the people in this area have no concept of quality dining. Everything is smothered in cheese and everyone uses iceburg lettuce for salads. Of course I've been spoiled coming from California, but I seriously wonder about Tooele...why are people so willing to put up with slop for food and how do the restaurants even stay in business? Does anybody know what I'm talking about? It's really a puzzle and a frustration that there's little good food to be found here. Anyone considering opening a quality restaurant with unique (non white-bread) and delicious food should blow away the "competition" here. Tooele needs a culinary wake up call.

Oh boy, do I hear you!! There is that new restaurant that opened up in Tooele and it is supposed to be pretty good. I have not tried it myself, however. I think we need a couple of good quality sit down restaurants...and not mexican food either. We have plenty of those. I want something that serves steak, seafood and maybe has a liquor license.

Like everything else in small towns getting bigger.
Give them a bit of time, but then in Utah that may be 5 or 10 years .....

Yes, kay, Sostanza is good and worth visiting (if that's what you are referring to)...however, it is higher in price and requires appropriately nice attire (if you care about such things, some in Tooele don't). Tooele is in dire need of less up-scale yet equally good, casual attire, sit-down restaurants. My husband and I just went to La Frontera (yet another Mexican "food" place) at the south end of main street and it was horrendous...everything smothered in cheese (even when I asked for very little) and no ingredient or taste difference between the different menu items. Nasty and a waste of money. How do places like that stay open and occupied? I don't get it.

Supposedly for 2009, Tooele was ranked at #9 in the nation by the U.S. Census Bureau for cities experiencing growth, that was up from #20-something in 2007. All I know is, the less competitive, small-town businesses are going to suffer if they can't keep up with the professionalism and marketing-saavy of the bigger names in business that decide to set up shop in Tooele.

Yes, it is Sostanza. I will have to visit sometime. I would love to see an Outback Steakhouse or something of that fashion out here. I do wonder if the community could sustain it for very long, however. I know that I couldn't afford to eat someplace like that very often. I would trade the Denny's for an Outbacks!! Hmmm...THERE'S an idea! Of course, I am totally not touching on what I think your point is....which is that the places that do exist right now need to pick up the pace with some better quality food and service!

Have you tried the Stockton Grill?

Actually, I heard that a restaurant just recently opened in Stockton, is that the one? Have you been there and is it any good?

We went when it first opened. The food was actually pretty good. It is a very casual place, but the service was a bit lacking when we went...I try to keep an open mind that it *had* just opened. The trouble, I think, is that it is a small town and the waitress knew EVERYONE. So, of course, she had to talk with all the customers. We only went that once, so I am not sure if the wrinkles have been ironed out. Besides, something like that might not bother others as much as it kind of irked me that night.

Can't handle common man's food eh?

Tooele is not center of culinary delights...in fact it's one of the poorer cities around SLC both for eating out and general income to begin with. There are still good places to eat out there though. My favorite is American Burger, I also like Virg's breakfast burritos. There isn't a single suit and tie place that you need reservations to get into and can call the guy making the stuff in the back a "chef", but that kind of place is rare in UT anyway.

No reflection on you, but I tried American Burger and my tastebuds revolted. I simply walked into Virg's and had to leave because the place looked unkempt and dirty and the atmosphere was frighteningly like that of a high school cafeteria, in essence, no effort to create a dining experience whatsoever. People here seem to eat for sustenance, approaching a meal like a practical necessity (the cheaper the meal, the better) rather than a celebration of the capacity humans have to experience sensory pleasure and a celebration of life through well-prepared food.
