Default Is there any crime in Vancouver?

Hey, so my family is thinking of relocating to Vancouver and was wondering if there is any crime to be worried about in the area? Can one walk around at any hour and not feel unsafe?

Also, are there any areas to "avoid" living wise?

Can anyone provide info on Washougal, Ridgefield, or Battle Grounds as well?

Thanks!

Just an observation from someone who has never been to Vancouver. Vancouver is across the river from Portland, a big city. Not too many big cities are safe to walk around in the middle of the night in all parts of the city. The surrounding cities can generally be affected as well. I say this coming from a small Midwest town that is next to a big city. There are some areas that I would not take a chance in to walk around in the middle of the night alone.
That being said. I have heard some great things about the Vancouver/ Portland area. I would not hesitate to live in either city. Of course I like more breathing room and would prefer to live in the outskirts of town.
I offer the same advice that I have been given. Go there, take a look around. If it looks nice, stay there in a hotel for a week/ weekend and check it out. Your opinion of the place is the one that really counts. You can also talk to some of the neighbors and business owners while you are there. Good luck!
Peace,
Wc@h

This is completely untrue for Portland. There is no place in Portland or Vancouver that I would hesitate walking around at night alone in. There is not a lot of murders and gang activity that you need to worry about.

Most crimes are Domestic Abuse calls or property crimes such as graffiti or car prowling with a mixture of drug related crimes thrown in.

As a single female you'd want to be more aware of areas you're in and what is behind you then a single male.

Good to know! Thank you for correcting me. Especially since my mother in law lives outside of Portland alone and occasionally goes in to the city. My wife and I want to move to WA around the Sequim/ PA area, but may move close to her mom while she is still with us. So that is good news!

Look at the crime statistics; look at this links like this for the murder rate: Updated state-by-state national murder rate map for 2010 You'll notice both Wa and Or are "safer" than most of the Midwest States. Violence isn't the norm, but crimes like burglaries, carjacking are. This isn't to say there's absolutely no crimes in Vancouver/PDX-- obviously there are. As long as you're vigilante and responsible for your things/property, odds are you won't be accosted.

And I agree... as a woman, PDX (and Vancouver) is pretty safe even at night time. I'd feel comfortable walking alone in the area.

Interesting Inkpoe! thanks.
One of the posters made an observation about MI.Detroit making the state look bad. Are there any statistics per city for WA and OR?

Washington Association of Sheriffs & Police Chiefs

Look into "Crime 2010". It talks about the entire state, and the statistics for all kinds of crime. If you want focus only on Vancouver, just scroll down to page 40 and look under Clark County. It covers just about the entire area of Vancouver (including Camas, Ridgefield, Washougal, La Center and Battle Ground). As for PDX, you can ask in their forum; probably like us, they see their crime rate going down.
