I'm happy to say we found a rental house in Ridgefield and we are looking forward to moving there at the end of this month, from Michigan. My wife and I are avid hikers and paddlers and are looking for recommendations for these activities in that immediate area. The wildlife refuge doesn't allow dogs, so we'll have to limit our hiking with the pooch to other areas. Is paddling allowed inside the refuge itself?

Be sure to check out Lewisville Park. That's not too far from you.
There is plenty of room for walkies there with your dog, and it's beautiful!

I'm almost certain it is. There are kayak rental places inside the refuge itself. And you see people going up and down all the waterways.

If you like hiking and the outdoors, our corner of the United States is arguably the best for it. Mild temperatures most of the year, low humidity, few biting insects. Just got to watch the rains in the winter, including snow at elevation. But you'll see people out 24/7/365, even biking in the rain in January.

There's no kayaking or boating within the refuge, but Ridgefield has a small port where people launch boats, kayaks, etc. You might be here in time for The Big Paddle at the beginning of June. Besides no dogs in the refuge, there is also no hiking, except on one designated path that is opened seasonally. However, the county is full of good hiking trails, not to mention up the Gorge.

Welcome to Ridgefield!
