Don't believe the hype about the paper mill

We live in Camas and love it, eventually I'd like to get further out of town down the gorge. Yes though the winds are stronger and there is going to be more ice and snow than in town. Good luck!

for water plus a nicer climate, consider Woodland or Kalama. BUT I'm also thinking of your age and need for services. I am currently struggling through trying to sell and place some seniors who moved to Washougal in their early 70's and 15 yrs later are really getting worn out driving each time they need services. It is dangerous and unnecessary additional risk to them and others. With the potential for future energy price increases + our new 'round-a-bouts' I see a nightmare of burden. There are plenty of seniors who age well in Washougal, and they have a great senior nutrition program that meets next to the library 4 days a week. I have done senior services volunteer work for 20 yrs and you need to think about the "BIG picture" and well into the future.

I think the water might be more enjoyable in Kalama. (lakes + Columbia + smaller rivers) and less wind / cold, EZ commute to Longview for services (No / few ice days). Some parts of Kelso are ok, but Longview need to be careful in choosing a spot to call home. Meth issues.

I have a friend who does 'stream fishing' at age 94, but he's a rare creature. Most guys are not so strong / stable to take that risk. The current in the Washougal River AND the Columbia River @ Washougal is tricky.

Another choice would be Stevenson, WA. They have great senior support services including transportation. Their 'backwater' is ideal for small craft and leisurely water sports + they have great access to Columbia River. They also have a superb Swimming pool at the High School with elder exercise. But... in the spirit of saving bucks, the city fathers are threatening to close the pool. (they will regret not digging up a better solution). I highly recommend looking into Stevenson. It is worth your extra 1/2 drive just to enjoy it. A bit more snow, but less wind than Washougal. A better community from my perspective; (Support / friendly, not 80% bedroom / commuter community) + some senior and health care options. And MUCH prettier. Spend an hour enjoying the library and lobby at Skamania Lodge, have a hot cocoa on the house, and think how nice it will be to enjoy a cold winter day there by the fireplace overlooking the River. Even the city Library is a very nice spot.
