Default SW WA family resorts/vacation itineraries

I'm a Washington native living and working in Taipei, Taiwan. I'm bringing my (Taiwanese) wife and five-year-old son to the SW WA area for one week's vacation in early September and would be grateful for any family resort/vacation itinerary suggestions in the general area, including the coast. We'll be driving down from Seattle.

My son has spent all his life in congested urban Asian environments except for one week last summer which we spent in the Willamette Valley. We hiked the pristine forests, waded in ice-cold mountain streams and visited farms there and my son thought he was in heaven. He cried when we left and hasn't stopped asking when we're going back to America so I'd really like to organize a first-class experience for both he and my wife.

Thank you in advance for any input.

On your way down from Seattle, take a swing over to Mt. St. Helens. If your looking for first class accommodation's after that, the Skamania Lodge is probably the best around. It's sits right in the Gorge, so your within driving distance of all kinds of outdoor activities. Take them up to Mt. Hood or over the the Old Columbia Highway to explore the waterfalls. There are trails all over, you can even get them wind surfing lessons in the best wind surfing area in the world.

There's plenty to do on the coast too. From flying kites on Long Beach to the beaches of Seaside and Cannon Beach. Take them clam digging at Willipa Bay and cook them over a fire right there. Take them to see the lighthouses on the coast, if the waves are breaking hard, well that just adds to it.

There's plenty here for them to enjoy.

st33lcas3, thank you for the excellent suggestions, particularly Skamania Lodge, the Old Columbia Highway drive and clam-digging at Willipa Bay.
