Another Vancouver question
Hello again,
I posted a few days ago asking about the best place to live in Vancouver. Anyone know about the area just south of 500 and between 5 fwy and 205? I was looking at an apartment complex there which looks nice and the reviews aren't bad I'm just scared of picking a bad neighborhood. Any feedback is appreciated!

That's kind of a large area. Can you narrow it down a bit? Which apartment complex is it? I've known complexes to vary greatly, even ones next door to each other.
In general, the areas near Vancouver Mall (SR500 and I-205 area) aren't the greatest. Some are okay, but it can be kind of difficult to figure out which ones are which until you've lived there for a little while. Nothing like suddenly finding out which house is the meth den or the party house on the block.
What's the name of the complex?

yeah, that area (near Kyrocera ? / east 4th Plain Blvd) is not the best, but again it depends on the complex, this is not a ghetto, and not first rate. Some are newer, others are ~ 25 yrs old (near Post Office / Caples Rd) That still doesn't mean they are bad. You might want to ask the manager if there is any 'section 8' or subsidized housing within complex or area.
East 4th Plain & 18th st ~ Grand St east to Faulk Rd has a pretty rough reputation
What are your commute needs (area / bus?)
I'd look in 'the heights' (along Mill Plain east of Mcloughlin) excluding area near Walmart / west of 205 and also in Cascade Park, but again, you need to scope it out for yourself to be certain.
sorry we can't be more specific. with the name of the joint, someone in town could drive by, but apartment hunting is a pretty individualistic excercise.

If it's "just south of 500", that would make it between 500 and Fourth Plain. Not really a good part of town, either towards the east end or the west. Although, the western side (closer to downtown) of that area is much skeezier compared to the eastern side.
Might not be a bad idea to check the complex on apartmentratings.com.

Hello again. My husband and I will be working for the IKEA that is going in at 205 and airport way so close 205 is the best. The apt complex was called Ashley Terrace at 4500 Nicholson Road (98661 zip) and I did look it up on that website and most people's comments are complementary just nothing about the neighborhood. I know from what I've read here that east of 205 is best it's just looked like these places were a lot more spacious for the price. Cascade park is a place where we looked around the last time we were in town and we liked it. If anyone would like to drive by I can't tell you how nice that is believe me nobody in california would be so nice! Thanks again.

Haven't been by yet, but...that is just north and adjacent to Bagley Park. Not good... tho Apartments I think are pretty new.
If IKEA is the job, then I would look from Burton road south to the river, as close to 205 as possible. (Ellsworth would be really nice if you biked, almost all downhill to work) or in 'the heights' (Andreson or Garrison and Mill Plain).or off 164th AVE (lots of places). It would really be nice to take your bikes over the 205 Bridge to work on decent days (all 100 of them ) The fastest auto commute will likely be from the west (Lieser Rd) as the traffic from the east gets backed up. (or work Nights ... tough to commute on a bike...I hate running over possums on a bike, they are really gushy)
Keep the commute to work short till you have time to scope out a home destination of choice. Recreation is abundant on the 'east side', (I-205) and you don't get stuck waiting for a 'bridge lift' (I-5) when you were just expecting to 'hop over to Portland'.
Ouch ...OR income tax...

Honestly, no...this is not a good part of town. The reason they're "spacious for the price" is because of the area the complex is located. That area surrounded by SR500 on the north, Fourth Plain to the south, Andresen to the east, and St.John's/St.James to the west is a really undesirable area to live. Some of the highest crime rates around.
Definitely look more towards the east side. You'll be much happier. Even if you aren't all the way to Cascade Park, you'll be more content than living in or near Ashley Terrace.
Here's a listing of the crime stats by neighborhood as posted in the Columbian newspaper's online "Crime" section. Maybe you can use these crime stats while searching for apartments to help you narrow down which areas you'd like to live in.
