Music Scene in Vancouver (university, living in, move to)

I'm 22 and live in the UK - but am looking to move to Canada as soon as possible.

BUT... After living in York for university I don't want to move to a place without a decent music scene - as pretty as it is it sucked not having bands play there, or having any decent alternative clubs.

I've read a lot saying Toronto's music scene is better than Vancouver's - but what is Vancouver's actually like?

I can assume there will be the same run of standard clubs and such, but that is the same anywhere (though obviously some are bigger, some places have more etc) but I was wondering more about for the other genres. Are there any decent places that play Rock/Hardcore, or Hip-Hop, and any scene for live music?
