Hastings and gritty parts of Vancouver are so minor they are to add a decorative touch of Faux Harlem so that the Asians who visit can experience a faux scary urban North American city that view regularly view on TV screens.
Nevertheless, Vancouver now has serious drugs, crime, shootings and other urban problems but they all agree it is the Torontonians who brought them in. Not the Americans or South Americans. Vancouver's drug addicts are kind and friendly though and share their food with strangers, unlike those in other American cities or in Toronto.
New Yorkers on visits are both seen as very wealthy and generous due to corporate reimbursement largesse and seen favorably. Vancouverites are simple though and consider Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep as token "New Yorkers" as long as they have seen them on TV in a role as a New Yorker and more importantly, bought the home downtown. Vancouverites ate different from new immigres from Calgary who made a lot during the oil boom but hasn't bought a house in Vancouver yet. Rightly or wrongly, in the Vancouver mindset, this person is then seen as a poor Canadian from out in the boonies in other parts of Canadian wilderness.

Montrealais are seen as poor but quirky friendly and French who can bring in exciting culinary skills. Torontonians can only bring in TSX franchises like Tim Horton's and Wendy's and seen as boring, predictable, business minded and generally yucky. Immigrant ethnic populations from Toronto are neither pedigreed Asians nor wealthy elite and are seen as dangerous, aggressive people who bring drugs and shootouts in from Detroit, every Vancouverites nightmare, antithesis of what Vancouver is and stands for.
Vancouverites also don't like the Torontonian about accent. Vancouver is more laid back, friendly, wealthy, new economy, eco tourism, West Coast and immigrants from Toronto are mostly white, rude, stingy, economic refugees who commit racist comments offhand or are toi sexually attracted to West Coast Canadians for its futuristic racial blending as Toronto is more like a ghetto mosaic.
New Yorkers are looked at differently because they are higher up in the property Ponzi scheme that Vancouver worships whereas Toronto is not. Los Angeles create jobs for Hollywood North whereas Toronto tries to steal Vancouver's condo business. Torontonians are also seen as pompous for no reason as if Vancouverites want culture, they fly to New York for the weekend, not to the ROM.
Vancouverites are only interested in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas and New York. They don't really know where or care where Toronto, Yellowknife and Ottawa is. Montreal and Quebec are like the interesting other end of the world. All the rest to the Vancouverite mindset is just snow and polar bears.
THIS is why I live on a mountaintop 200 miles from the closest big city, and why I detest them.
I love people - all kinds of people, from all over the world and every culture you care to name, but I can't abide all the inane bickering and nitpicking that seems never ending between those who choose to segment themselves into east and west, right and left, black and white, and so on. Sigh....
