If you really want to see Vancouver's weather realtime, just go to www.katkam.ca which is a webcam overlooking the Burrard Street Bridge and English Bay. That's really the weather in Vancouver *right now*

However, the summer days are consistently warm/hot. The sun shines pretty much all the time. The evenings are cooler than Toronto's, but it is welcome after a hot day. Unless you live in the (San Fernando) Valley, you don't really need an air conditioner, just fans, and at night you just sleep with the windows open. This is especially true of the South Bay cities, Marina del Rey, and Venice.

Toronto--well, it's hard to say, because this summer (2009) just didn't happen. The sun finally emerged in late Aug/Sept for about two weeks, and that was it. The nights were fairly muggy and warm, and I definitely needed an air conditioner, but oddly enough, the overcast days just felt so cool, especially near the waterfront.

I'd take cooler nights and actual sunshine any day over perpetual humidity and sporadic blue skies! (Of course, the other summers I've been to Toronto were not quite this extreme. Still, the humidity is consistent.)
That was by no means a normal summer that you just had...I lived in TO for 42 years and most summers were good.

I have alos lived in Victoria BC and as beautiful as it is, I don't think I could go back, that west coast weather (In Canada anyhow) is way too dark, wet and grey for me. I think I'd take the cold and snow over it if I come back. Right now I'm in AZ, perfect for me, summy and dry!

I agree with you about the PNW weather. I have to add though that THIS PAST summer we hit a high here in Seattle that was warmer (103) than anytime over the past 5 years on my land near Benson in SE Arizona (not sure what Victoria got to that day - but pretty sure it was DARNED HOT too). Just as Toronto was chilly this year, the PNW was COOKING!.

Default rain/cloudy/sun

Hi,

What is the weather pattern in Vancouver? A few days cloudy/rain with one day sunshine? Or periods of rain/cloudy/sun mixed every day?

Thanks.

There is no simple answer because there is no definite pattern. There are climate patterns (wet rainy winters, dry warm summers) but not absolutes in terms of weather.

You can get get both of what you described above: periods of rain and cloud and sun all in the same day. And you can also get days of cloud/rain followed by a day (or several days) of sun.

You can also get days of sunshine followed by an hour of rain, followed by more days of sunshine.

There basically is no universal pattern - it completely depends on the season.

In the winter months it's more rainy/cloudy than sunny. In the summer months it's more sunny than cloudy/rainy.

It also depends on where in Vancouver you are. North Vancouver experiences twice as much precipitation as White Rock, for example (two Vancouver suburbs). And they're only a 45 minute drive apart.

Vancouver gets the majority of its precipitation between the months of November and February. July through to September is drought season where you can get weeks of sunshine.

Doesn't 100% answer your question, but citystats.ca has some decent graphs for Vancouver showing rain days, etc.
