Granville sounds like what you'll find in EVERY city in the US. Only "dangerous" if you're lilly as all hell. Douchebags get in fights when they/re drunk. In a city of millions, somebody gets killed, often. What's it to you?

Swan Dive, I agree that those incidents sound bad. But these occur everyday where I live. Everyday some kid pulls a knife, somebody gets shot, It's so bad here schools have metal detctors, etc.. The police here will shoot you dead or as soon give you ticket. I was IMMEDIATLEY struck by how un-rough Vancouver was.

It's hard to imagine Vancouver declining with the 2010 olympics and all the new constructiuon taking place. I suppose it's possible, you live there, but that would seem extremely unlikely. The big drawback I see is the weather in winter.

Nope. But from what I've read while it's not biting cold, you could get depressed from lack of light.

Is that true? Is the BC winter a tough one from that aspect? People must cope with it somehow..

but its big and dramatic, you actually get videos on you tube about the chaos

vancouver is on the decline and its far from perfect its just that vancouver is a well markted product sold to many people

Vancouverites will never see beyond this city, it's sunk it's rotten roots into their very being. If only they could get a taste of what they're missing, the world is too big of a place for such a small city. The only people who think that Vancouver is the most beautiful and best place to live in have never left, or have failed to take a closer look at the world which surrounds this soul-less crevasse.
I try and tell myself to be more positive about Vancouver, but all the other countries and cities I've lived in have so much more appeal.
Who actually believes this city is so wonderful? It must be some kind of survival mechanism that kicks in when they realize that the situation in this city is beyond repair.
I am embarrassed of this city. I would not invite my friends from other countries to visit, in fear of boring them to death with Vancouver's lack of culture and general apathetic nature.
I could see myself living here permanently, if I was religious and decided I must suffer for my sins.

If you are old and arthritic I cannot imagine Vancouver even being livable at all, the dampness would kill you, better to live in San Diego where it is try, sunny and warm. But if you want to ski and hike, then come to Vancouver. If you are in business and want to make a fortune, New York, London, Zurich, Geneva are probably much better. If you are black and want to experience black culture or have your family do so then Vancouver is horrible, but if you are of Chinese decent and
want those things then Vancouver is paradise. This debate is off putting and Vancouver is going to loose in the end if it does not get its ego in check, humility is an under rated virtue
I don't like a lot of things about Vancouver.
It is like a giant suburb, with no real center.
The transit is the worst I've ever ridden on.
East Hastings is the worst street I've ever seen. I've seen to Beijing, Shanghai, Rome, Helsinki, Riga, Tallin, and St. Petersburg(Russia). It's by far the most boring, especially after listening to hippies speak about freedom and banging on their drums all day.
It is one of the least open minded places I've ever been, and I'm from Alberta. People are afraid to speak about anything that isn't politically correct. Try and tell a vancourite what you don't like about Vancouver and watch their jaws drop, like it's the center of the universe. Oh I suppose organic munching hipsters only exist in Vancouver.
Vancouver is like giant inspiration vampire, sucking the very life out of me. Inspiration and hope for the human race, has long since faded, since I made the unfortunate decision of residing here. Sometimes it makes me tired thinking about it so I try not to. Vancouver's mirrored buildings only reflect it's shallow self. It's the worst place I've ever lived. As soon as I can, I will leave and try and forget the city of banality

Hello Swan Dive, How are you?

Well, I'm a qualified dog trainer, a single 34 years old with (yet) no finished degree and a foreigner (non American-continental) and now I'm contemplating real hard whether to come to BC to take there a high quality and very recommended and highly regarded course in that field with thinking seriously afterwards to stay in the area and to grow and being developed within my craft.

I'm struggling now to just figure out if there's a possibility after spending generous sums of money to find a place which could employ me (legally) in the end of the program (possible in other provinces as well) and with all that on my mind I was also amusing myself with the privileged question: what would be the preferred place to settle down.

With all that being written it'll be great if you (and others with a good judgment could generously give an insight of yours regarding my aims, the plausibility, direction, productive tips etc.)

Great thanks on advance

Default Vancouver so cool its not

Im sorry, I cant hold my tongue on this. I lived in Vancouver for 3 years, and hated it. Everybody was very pretentious and cliquey, and generally false. The people seem to be motivated by images from extreme sport magazines. The cool people I did meet lived so far away it wasnt worth the trip. The bar scene is non existent, Ive never seen a city with so few bars, unless you want to hang out on Granville, which sucks. I dont get it.
