Vancouver Beaches
I am thinking about applying to UBC-Vancouver, and I was wondering about any beaches near the campus? I am not into drugs and am not a hippy so wreck beach would not be my thing

Most people that go to Wreck Beach are not Hippies and I suspect that only 10% of the crowd are enjoying drugs. That is why it so beautiful. To each their own.
You don't need to be into anything (drugs or hippies) to enjoy a public park. If you are serious about applying to UBC and your main concern is the beaches nearby I would suggest making another appointment with your psychiatrist.

Kileau,
1. Go to Edit
2. Click Find
3. Type in "main concern"
4. Show me where in my post that phrase shows up

Jericho is where most people head to. 5 minutes drive from UBC (go along the northern coast of it), generally quiet compared to Kitsilano/English Bay and free parking.

Wreck beach goes for miles, starts at #4 all the way to #8 I think. You can be where the crowds are or no one at all, and can be dressed or undressed .. whichever you desire. It's all pretty layed back and fairly low key .. unless you're right in the hub.
In a city of beaches with 'cleaned-up beaches and organized logs', this stretch is so beautiful because it's left wild and unattended.
UBC is surrounded by gorgeous beach area, but get ready for a steep hike up and down.
From any of the Wreck Beach entrances, it's a nice hike along the water, to the more public beaches .. Spanish Banks and then Jericho as the above poster mentioned.
UBC itself is situated in beautiful surroundings .. lovely grounds, gardens and lots of trees .. sitting high above the oceans and beaches below.

There are beaches all over the lower mainland. Do a google search.ericho, Kits, Spanish banks, Sunset, English bay to name a few. Wreck is not all hippies......that is a misconception! And I agree......if you are thinking of applying to a school based on its proximity to beaches, you should perhaps give it a bit more thought!

seriously where did I say i am applying for the beaches. My dad lives in Canada and UBC is strong in my desired major so I applied there and now I am looking into the surrounding area, so stop giving me advice about college selection and focus on the question, don't worry about my motives behind asking it.

I can understand if you aren't into the wreck beach thing it can be a little creepy seeing a wrinkly old dude sitting there alone or with partners (again, to each their own). You do have a lot of choices for beaches nearby, the best in my opinion is "spanish banks." Great place to read and study or just hang out do some kitesurfing. Besides beaches, you will also find some great hiking trails and ocean view spots where you can go relax when it is not raining. Did you look into the University of Victoria? Also right near water.

oh, and I think you may have offended some nice people by referring to wreck beach as a place for hippies and druggies. I know I would not have liked being referred to as those when I walked down there to check it out. peace
