Does homophobia seem to continue to be a problem in Canada and British Columbia areas that you are near or have traveled too?

My guess, haven't been there yet, would be it's more progressive than most American cities, but still has a lot of hurdles to jump.

Agree. By the measure of legalized gay-marriages in only 6 states out of 50, yes, I presume so.

Is homophobia a problem in Vancouver?

Yes and no.

Homophobia's a problem, regardless of the city.

Is there homophobia in Vancouver?

Yes.

It's rare, but on occasion it rears its ugly head. It's not the norm, however.

Is homophobia common and prevalent to the point of it being a problem in Vancouver?

No.

Vancouver, like San Francisco, has a pretty open-minded, socially-liberal, tolerant population with a large, celebrated and open gay community. Pride week is one of the largest festivals in the city. Most people don't care one way or another what your sexuality is. It's not really a big issue here. The majority of locals have more important things to worry about.

I feel that the larger Canadian cities are pretty progressive so I don't think you'll have a problem (I was raised in Toronto - home of gay pride, and also lived in Victoria) however all it takes is one bad apple to create that vibe.

I read some article of Vancouver having problems with homophobia in schools and with some individuals not wanting men to hold hands. But that could be isolated problems that create a bad vibe.

Yes, they're isolated incidents, hardly representative of Vancouver at large.

What articles were you reading, anyway?

Any basic research will tell you that Vancouver is one of the more progressive cities when it comes to same sex issues.

Of course there will always be individuals who don't want men to hold hands.

If you want to know "a bad vibe" - come to a small Russian town - you'll be shown one: after this Vancouver will seem to be a capital of homophobia
